Welcome Back
Hey springfield, THE LIBRARY IS EXPANDING!!
Exciting things are happening at Springfield Memorial Library — and they want you to be part of it! 2026 is a big year for Springfield Memoral Library, and it’s all because of the incredible support from our City of Springfield! Springfiel is an amazing community!
First and foremost, Springfield Memorial Library is celebrating its 100th Anniversary! Throughout the year, look for special events, celebrations, and historical displays as we honor a century of learning, exploration, and community connection.
To kick things off, the Library Board has issued a fun reading challenge! Both library staff and our teenage patrons are competing to see who can read the most books in 2026. If you’re part of one of these groups, let us know when you finish a book, and we’ll add it to the official tally!
But the excitement doesn’t stop there. We are in the beginning stages of planning a library expansion, and we want your input. Gather your thoughts, ideas, and dreams and join us at our preliminary planning meeting:
Thursday, January 22nd
6:30–7:30 PM

I tried a new recipe using ReMain’s honey — just drizzle honey on carrots and bake. Simple, real food that’s good for the body and the soul.

Springfield History
The Bizzard of 1975
The January 10, 1975, blizzard brought between 10 and 16 inches of snow, accompanied by wind gusts
of 50 to 60 mph, severely impacting area residents. Reports indicated that Springfield residents working
in Omaha could not return home on Friday evening. Fortunately, maintenance supervisor Lowell “Bud”
Penny managed to clear most of Springfield's streets by Saturday afternoon. The effort to widen the
snow-packed roads began after initial snow removal in town. Platteview Road, near the high school, was
reduced to a single lane due to towering walls of snow drifts. Bob Iske, the president of Springfield State
Bank, opted for a snowmobile to travel from his home in Villa Springs to town.

Springfield NOW
Platteview High School (as of January 19):
The video board is officially up!
While a few sponsors will still be added to the lower portion, you can already see how impressive this upgrade is. A huge thank-you to the Springfield Platteview Education Foundation and Horizon Bank, Member FDIC, for making this possible.
This is a welcome addition and a major upgrade to the stadium!

Insurance Tip– Preventing Frozen Pipes
When temperatures drop, pipes can freeze and burst—one of the most common (and costly) causes of winter property damage. Pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, garages, exterior walls, or under cabinets are most at risk. Freezing can occur at 20°F or even higher, especially with poor insulation.
To help prevent frozen pipes:
- Keep garage doors closed if water lines run through them.
- Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets to let warm air circulate.
- Let cold water drip from faucets served by exposed pipes.
- Keep your thermostat at a consistent temperature, day and night.
- If traveling, leave the heat on (no lower than 55°F).
- Insulate exposed pipes—an inexpensive fix that can prevent costly damage.
A little prevention now can save major repairs later.

Fit Tip: Exercise Your Way to a Better Brain
Upgrading your workouts is always popular this time of year — but here’s the bonus most people don’t talk about: movement is incredible for your brain.
Pretty much every study on brain health says the same thing. Exercise helps repair damage, build new neural connections, and boost blood flow upstairs. Translation? Moving your body helps protect your brain from shrinking and lowers the risk of things like Alzheimer’s and dementia.
You don’t need anything fancy either. Walking counts. Lifting counts. Getting your heart rate up a few times a week goes a long way.
Train your body. Protect your brain. Win-win.

The very first library in the United States was founded in 1731. Benjamin Franklin helped establish the Library Company of Philadelphia so people could share books, ideas, and knowledge—long before free public libraries became common.
That same spirit still matters today. Libraries have always been about more than books; they are places of community, curiosity, and opportunity—where people of all ages can learn, connect, and grow.
