Sarpy County Kids Fire Camp
2010_firecamp.jpg
Sarpy County Fire Departments offer an annual fire camp to community children at the Bellevue Fire Departments Training Site.  Originally organized for children of volunteer firefighters, Fire Camp is held over a three day period. Each day is designed for age appropriate classes in the morning and afternoons are reserved for various water games. Actual fire and rescue demonstrations are shown throughout the day. This past year was a 3 day program with a different age group attending each day. Age groups are children aged 5-6, second 7-9, and third 10-11. This camp is taught by volunteer firemen and rescue personnel. While the subject material is generally the same basic first aid, CPR, helmet safety and calling 911. An example of a class is “Friendly Firefighter”, younger children are exposed to firefighters in full turnout gear with air packs to help them not be scared in the event of a fire, while older children are taught how to react to a smoke detector when home alone. The program always welcomes special needs children and days of attendance will be worked with parents and instructors. The community is always welcome to lend a hand, in fact encouraged so that our volunteer firefighter population is not overtaxed and unable to respond to calls. BVFD is truly blessed with local business support to assist with making this camp possible. Local business supplements BVFDs budget each year with surprising generosity.

This year Springfield Vol. Fire Dept. is getting involved and would like to invite Springfield children to attend this year’s camp.  Transportation will be provided to and from the camp on your child(ren)s assigned day.  Drop off and pick up will be at the Springfield Fire Dept.  (times will be determined at a later date).

Registration forms are available at the Springfield Fire Department.  Classes will fill quickly - to assure a spot for your child please get your registrations in as soon as possible.

Any questions please contact Springfield Vol. Fire Dept. 253-2600.

Ladies Night at the Library
 Thursday April 15, 2010

Here is a great opportunity to get out of the house and stay "LOCAL" for some ladies night fun.  We will be doing Gentle Stretch yoga, then tap into our creative side with a type of doodle art called, "Zentangle". The Zentangle art form and method was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas.  Zentangle is a registered trademark of Zentangle, Inc.  Learn more at zentangle.com.

Both Yoga and Zentangle, is not about getting anywhere or getting it right, just the intention of letting go for a while.

All we ask to participate, is a donation of non-perishable food item(s) for our local food pantry at the Springfield First United Methodist Church.  Come to help yourself and our community too!  Please wear loose comfortable clothes, and bring a blanket and small pillow to sit on (if you have a yoga mat, bring that).  We will be gathering at 6:45p.m. and begin at 7:00, ending about 8:30.

Manley, NE [April 9, 2010]-  The Blackwood Brothers Quartet, a popular and enduring force in Gospel music, will be performing at the Lofte Community Theatre in Manley on Sunday, April 25th at 2pm.

The Blackwood Brothers have recorded over 200 albums and toured in 47 countries.  They have won eight Grammy Awards and 6 Dove Awards.  Over the years, the Blackwood Brothers have been guests on the Barbara Mandrell Show, Hee-Haw, and The Grand Old Opry.  They have sung with Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner, Tennessee Ernie Ford and many more.  They were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in Nashville in 1998.  The group now consists of Jimmy Blackwood, Wayne Little, Randy Byrd and Brad White.

The original Blackwood Brothers formed in 1934 in Choctaw County, Mississippi.  In 1954 the quartet performed on the “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” show on television.  Two weeks after winning the competition, two of the original Blackwood brothers, R.W. and Bill Lyles, were both killed in a plane crash in Alabama.  The surviving Blackwoods regrouped, adding younger brother Cecil to sing baritone and J.D. Sumner singing bass.

Elvis Presley loved gospel music and attended many of the Blackwood concerts at the Ellis Auditorium in Memphis.  When his mother, Gladys Presley, died in 1958, Elvis and his father asked the Blackwoods to sing at her funeral.

Tickets for this event are $16.  Reservations are not required, but are strongly suggested.  When the Lofte last hosted The Blackwood Brothers in 2008, the event was completely sold-out.  More information can be found on the Lofte’s website, www.Lofte.com, or by calling the box office at (402) 234-2553.  Please join us on Sunday, April 25th at 2pm for this wonderful concert event!
