NEBRASKA WINERY AND GRAPE GROWERS

PASSPORT PROGRAM

Richard Hilske, Nebraska Winery and Grape Growers (NWGGA) President announced the kickoff of the association’s 2011 Passport Program. The passport consists of a map of Nebraska showing the locations of Nebraska’s wineries and tasting rooms. Upon purchase of wine or a tasting, the passport is stamped and participants are ready for their next location.

“Year four of the program features 23 Nebraska wineries and 6 tasting rooms, where participants can pick up a passport and begin enjoying Nebraska’s wines. Nearly 28,000 passports have been distributed across the state. Our Passport Program is designed to encourage more Nebraskans to visit our award-winning wineries in 2011,” Hilske said. Passports can also be downloaded from the association’s website atwww.nebraskawines.com. “The NWGGA Passport Program not only promotes Nebraska wines, but also encourages people to visit communities and buy other products all over the state. It’s a win-win for everyone,” concluded Hilske.

In addition, Passport Program participants who visit at least 15 wineries and 4 tasting during the year are automatically entered into a prize drawing. The 2010 NWGGA Passport Grand Prize winner was Shane Marquis of Lincoln, who won a weekend stay in a Nebraska Bed & Breakfast Inn of his choice. First prize, a case of Nebraska wines, was awarded to Karen Bullard of Omaha. Vicki Vonloh of Lincoln won second prize, a From Nebraska Gift Shop $50 Gift Certificate.

Lofte Receives Two Awards at Regional Competition

The Lofte Community Theatre of Manley, NE was one of two Nebraska arts organizations recently selected to represent the state at the AACT Regional play competition held in Kansas.  Players from the Lofte performed a one hour cutting from "Leaving Iowa," a comedy by Tim Clue & Spike Manton that revolves around one man's memories of childhood family vacations.

In all, there were ten entries from the states of Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, North and South Dakota, Minnesota and Missouri.  The competition took place at the Salina Community Theatre April 28-May 1.  At the end of the competition, the Lofte took home two prestigious awards; "Best Costumes," and actor Larry Bauers of Louisville was awarded, "Best Supporting Actor."  Beatrice's Community Players were recognized in the category of "Best Sound."  The Lofte is a non-profit organization and was able to attend the competition thanks to generous donations from the general public as well as a grant from the Nebraska Arts Council.

Artistic Director Kevin Colbert was extremely proud of the cast's performance.  He also noted that the winner of the competition, "Wiley and the Hairy Man," from a theater in Cloquet, Minnesota was directed by Cheryl Kramer-Milder (formerly Callahan).  Cheryl is a Lofte Community Theatre alumni who performed in many of their productions from 1978-1981.  The Minnesota team will now advance to the national AACT competition being held in Rochester, NY.

The full-length version of "Leaving Iowa," will open the Lofte's 2011 season.  Performances will run May 28-June 12.  Tickets are $17 and can be purchased online at www.Lofte.com or by calling the Lofte box office (402) 234-2553.

GREENBLATT & SEAY SCHEDULE

Mark your calendars for Homestead National Monument of America’s Monumental Fiddling Championship and Acoustic Band Contest on Saturday, May 28, 2011. This day of rousing music and fun-filled competition will take place at the Homestead Education Center in Beatrice.  There is a total of $1000 in prize money thanks to the Leigh F. Coffin, Jane M. Coffin, and Leigh M. Coffin Foundation.  New this year, first place winners will be able to choose either prize money or a new fiddle.  There will also be a drawing for a free fiddle.  There is no registration or admission fee for the Monumental Fiddling Championship and Acoustic Band Contest.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. along with a free fiddling workshop offered by Deborah Greenblatt.  This year, Deborah will be showing off her latest acquisition, the nyckelharpa, which is the traditional keyed fiddle of Sweden.

Competition starts at 2 p.m. Participants will be divided into Junior (less than five years experience) and Senior Divisions. Participants will be asked to play a hoedown, waltz and tune of choice.  All music should be from the homesteading era of 1862 to when Homestead National Monument of America was created in 1936.  First place winners in each category will receive a trophy and be able to choose either prize money or a new fiddle.  Second and third place winners will receive a trophy and a cash prize.  An evening concert of winners will follow the competition beginning at 7 p.m.

The historic Old Avoca Schoolhouse was built in 1925, and has been the home of the Schoolhouse Performance Series since 1990.  Music lessons, workshops, fiddle camps, and field trips are offered by Schoolhouse residents, Greenblatt & Seay, and are available by appointment.
