HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS CAPTIVATE THE METRO

Annual Week of Understanding to reach over 5,000 Nebraska Students and Community Members

The Institute for Holocaust Education (IHE) presents its sixth annual Week of Understanding, March 28 – April 1, 2016.

The week of programming provides a forum for Holocaust education and remembrance through survivor testimony and other public events. Public and private schools across the Metro are participating. This year’s schedule includes more than 30 events with 9 survivors and 1 liberator.

“Week of Understanding is based on a belief that hearing testimony, bearing witness to these stories, and understanding the history of the Holocaust can change the way we act today. The speakers and presenters strive to show how hate and discrimination can escalate to genocide if left unchecked; they ask listeners to be responsible for their actions, and to realize that one person can make a difference” said Liz Feldstern, Executive Director of the Institute for Holocaust Education.

And it’s not only students who benefit from this inspiring program. Public events will be:

Monday, March 28
7:00 p.m. at the Omaha Community Playhouse
One-time, special performance of The Mitzvah. Conceived, co-written and performed by Roger Grunwald, The Mitzvah tells the tragic story of a German half-Jew who becomes a decorated officer in Hitler’s army. The short play is followed by a lecture examining the historical conditions that produced two centuries of German-Jewish striving, intermarriage and conversion, which, in turn, produced over a hundred thousand “mischlinge” soldiers.
Free, but advance ticket reservations are needed: Visit
ihene.org or bit.ly/TheMitzvah
Address: 6915 Cass St., Omaha Community Playhouse

Tuesday, March 29
7:00 p.m. at Countryside Community Church
In collaboration with the Center for Faith Studies, Holocaust survivors Magda Brown and Agnes Schwartz will each share their testimonies and answer questions at this event, which is open to the public. Both women are from Hungary and eventually wound up in Skokie, IL - but have very different stories of survival.
Free, no registration required
Address: 8787 Pacific St., Countryside Community Church

Other speakers for the week will include Holocaust survivors Sami Steigmann (New York), Robbie Waisman (Vancouver), Kitty Williams (Council Bluffs), Bea Karp, and Dr. Fred Kader (both of Omaha). US Military liberator, Col. Roy Long will also speak to students.

This annual educational initiative, Week of Understanding, was created by the Institute for Holocaust Education in partnership with the Omaha Public Schools. It is designed to deliver Holocaust survivor testimony through personal appearances and distance learning technology.

Week of Understanding is made possible with generous support from the Sherwood Foundation, Omaha Public Schools Foundation, the Shirley and Leonard Goldstein Supporting Foundation, and the Murray and Sharee Newman Supporting Foundation (both of the Jewish Federation of Omaha Foundation).

About the IHE:

Since 2000, the Institute for Holocaust Education has provided educational resources, workshops, survivor testimony, and integrated arts programming to thousands of students, educators and the public throughout Nebraska and surrounding areas. The IHE also provides support to local Holocaust survivors and their families. We consider Holocaust education an integral component in inspiring our community to create a more just and equitable society. For more information, please visit www.ihene.org.

WEDDING MUSIC CONCERT

Greenblatt & Seay\'s Schoolhouse Performance Series features a concert of Wedding Music on Sunday, April 10, at 2:30 PM, in the Old Avoca, Nebraska Schoolhouse.  This is a great opportunity for folks who are planning a wedding to experience some of the most requested wedding tunes, including Pachelbel\'s \"Canon\", and Mendelssohn\'s \"Wedding March\", as well as selections that are perfect before and after the ceremony.

Besides Classical and Renaissance styles, Debby and David also play music from many cultures, i.e., Irish, Jewish, Swedish, etc.  The happily married couple use a variety of instruments, including hammered dulcimer, violin, nyckelharpa, guitar, harmonica, etc.

Greenblatt & Seay have been playing and singing together since the night they met, decades ago. The concert will be downstairs, followed by light refreshments, and a chance to chat and jam with the performers.

Avoca is in southern Cass County, Nebraska, on the 13 C Spur, one mile south of Highway 34.

Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for students and senior citizens, and $1.00 for children. Seating is limited. For more information, write to  Greenblatt & Seay, The Old Schoolhouse, P.O. Box 671, Avoca, Nebraska, 68307, or call 402-275-3221, or e-mail them at
