What’s New in Springfield, NE
January 2, 2008

It’s the time to celebrate the beginning of a new year. Wishing each and everyone: “Health, happiness, and good fortune for all of 2008.”
January is National Hobby Month. With the cold and snowy weather this a wonderful time to start a new hobby. Get the kids involved, too! Learn a new game or craft, start a collection, volunteer, or take a class. There are many opportunities for you to discover your hidden talents and expand your horizons. For ideas check out this website: http://www.cyfernet.org/hottopic/hobbymonth.html
For a new volunteer opportunity right here in Springfield, don’t forget “Prayer Patches” begins tonight and will continue each first and third Wednesday of the month at United Methodist Church. Volunteers are needed to sew, iron, and pin fabric into blankets to donate to the Springfield Volunteer Rescue Units. Everyone is welcome to come and help out. Times will be 6:00 – 7:30pm with a break for the Wednesday night Prayer Service and then continue from 8:00-9:00 pm. Come for the whole session or as long as you are able to.
Planning for the Sarpy County Fair parade is in the works. The 2008 Fair will be July 30-Aug 3 with the Parade on Saturday, Aug 2. If your organization is interested in participating in the parade, please contact Russ Zeeb at RZeeb@aol.com or 681-0929. The St. Joseph Catholic Church Youth Group adopted a needy Sarpy County family for Christmas. The teens donated money and shopped for clothes and toys for the three children in the family, ages six ½, five and one ½. The Youth Group members are to be commended for their generosity.
The Springfield First United Methodist Church Sr. High Sunday School Class collected peanut butter and jelly during November. They collected 53 pounds of jelly and 76 pounds of peanut butter. They selected peanut butter because it is nutritious, does not need to be refrigerated and has a long shelf life. They donated 10% to the Springfield FUMC food pantry and 90% to Together, Inc. in Omaha. Together, Inc. is an ecumenically funded pantry providing emergency services to those in Douglas, Sarpy and Pottawatamie Counties.

Youth is when you're allowed to stay up late on New Year's Eve. Middle age is when you're forced to.
