What’s New in Springfield, NE

February 28, 2007

Today we observe the last day of February. On this day in history, basketball was televised for the first time in 1940. Fordham University vs. University of Pittsburgh was broadcast from Madison Square Garden. In December of 1891, basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith, an instructor at the YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts The first official game was played on January 20, 1892 in the YMCA gymnasium using nine players on a court about half the size of a present day court. Thus, we begin March Madness.

Marching into the third month of the year we traditionally say, “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” We always hope this adage proves to be true. Most importantly, the lamb part of it.

March is Women’s History Month. This annual event is designed to highlight the contributions of women to events in history. For more information on Women’s History Month, check out this website: www.nwhp.org/
