What’s New in Springfield, NE

Spring is in the air! We may still be in the throes of wintry temperatures but, Spring activities abound. First off, the Platteview High students will perform it’s spring musical, “Bye, Bye Birdie” this coming Friday, March 7 and Saturday, March 8 at 7:00pm. Beginning March 14th, Platteview High’s Spring Sports schedule starts with soccer games and track tournaments. The annual Easter Egg Hunt will take place at Buffalo Park on March 15th at 10:30am. This event is sponsored by the City of Springfield, Springfield Lodge No. 112 and the Springfield Business Association for all youth, ages one – 6th grade. And last but not least, the Easter Bunny is coming to Springfield, NE March 23rd.
Daylight Savings Time begins this Sunday. Be sure to spring those clocks ahead and it’s a good idea to check your smoke alarm batteries, also.
Bugeater’s Flea Market takes place during Springfield Days on Friday, June 6, noon – 10pm and Saturday, June 7, 8am – 4pm. Organizer’s, Steve and Jill Snodgrass, are offering early registration to all Springfield vendors. or apply online at http://www.bugeaterfleamarket.com/ Attention: Retired people will received the economic stimulus checks this summer only if they file a tax return. Anyone who has only social security and a small pension don’t have to file tax returns. BUT – if they do, enter their social security amount and any other income and just show $0.00 due, they will receive checks this summer. If you have access to www.IRS.gov you can print off 1040A forms – Social Security received goes on the left to line # 14A taxable portion on 14b should be $0.00.

A new beautiful new Display Showcase has been installed at Springfield Memorial Library. Fred and JoAnn Ostransky generously donated this wonderful addition to the library. JoAnn has also loaned her St. Patrick’s Day and Easter collection to the library for display. Now the library needs your help for future exhibits! Collections are needed to display in the showcase. Please consider a temporary loan to the library for an exhibit. Call the library at 253-2797 for further information.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SPRINGFIELD
March 5- May 7, every Wednesday, 9:30am – Preschool Storytime at Springfield Memorial Library. Storytime is starting up for the little ones once again. Bring your 2 ½ - 5 year olds to the library for 45 minutes of books and activities.
March 7 – South Sarpy School District#46 – Early dismissal for all schools. It’s the end of the quarter.
March 7&8, 7pm- Spring Musical “Bye, Bye Birdie” at Platteview High Auditorium presented by the very talented Platteview High School students. Don’t miss this!
Get the Word Out!!! The Springfield Library will be open for a special Friday Night Event for Teens. Teen Tech Night will feature games, computers, and snacks for ages 11-18 from 5:30 -8:30. Bring a friend and hang out for a while.
March 14 – Fish Fry Night The St. Joseph Catholic Church Knights of Columbus are having those delicious Lenten Friday Night Fish Fries. Desserts provided by the Ladies Guild. Stop by from 5:00 – 7:30pm for a great meal. Cheese pizza and Mac n Cheese, too!
March 15, 7pm- Meet Your Winemaker Dinner at Soaring Wings Vineyard. Paul Pleskach of “At Your Service Catering” will serve a five-course meal. He pairs each entree with our wines. $60 per person with reservations required.
March 18 & 19 – South Sarpy District #46 Schools, Parent/ Teacher conferences.
March 20 – 26 – South Sarpy District #46 Schools- Spring Break no school

Events Happening Elsewhere
Louisville:
Area artists are invited to participate in Air Your Art in Louisville, a public banner art display event, sponsored by BUILD (Businesses United In Louisville's Development) and Louisville businesses.
Artists are being asked to design and paint streetlight pole banners, incorporating the theme, “150 Years and Still Making Tracks.” The painted banners will then be displayed on Main Street in Louisville, May 17th through September 8th.
Interested artists should submit an entry form and design sketch for approval by March 7, 2008. Artists will be notified of approval and banners will then be distributed for painting, with the banner completion deadline set for May 9, 2008. Only one entry per artist will be allowed, with only twenty-three total banners available for the display.
An auction is also being planned for the banners after the display ends, with BUILD sharing a portion of the proceeds with the artists. Details about the auction, including a date, will be made available at a later time.

SPRINGFIELD HISTORICAL TIDBIT
The Farmers State Bank was located in the middle of the block on the south side of Main Street where the Dew Drop Inn now stands. This bank was opened for business on June 12, 1911 and cancelled its charter in December, 1921.
