Are you wearing o’ the green this week? On Saturday of this week we observe St. Patrick’s Day, the day when everyone is Irish. Celebrations center around green and all things associated with the country of Ireland. Wear green clothes, eat corn beef and cabbage, and dance an Irish jig to commemorate this special holiday. For a fun family activity try making Irish soda bread. Visit this website, http://www.bookguy.com/cooking/Sodabread.htm to learn all about traditional Irish bread recipes.
The snow is gone! Gone for good, we hope. Spring weather returned this week. This weather reminds us that digging into the garden begins soon. This month get ready for outdoor chores. Now is a good time to inspect those lawn tools. Clean and sharpen tools, tune up the lawn mower, and make any needed purchases of gardening supplies. You’ll get a jump start on lawn and yard work.
Platteview High School 2007 spring sports schedules start soon. Boy’s Golf, Boys & Girls Soccer, Boys & Girls Track are practicing now before their first events. Driving by the high school the other day I noticed the muddy practice field and soccer players. Hope things dry up soon for those Moms who have to wash those mucky clothes. Best of luck to all the players and teams this season. Go Platteview Trojans!!!

SPRINGFIELD HISTORICAL TIDBIT:
On March 19, 1903, a disastrous fire swept through the south side of Main Street, destroying a dozen businesses. Those businesses included, Kiecks Store, Elwell’s Implement Store, Bates Drug Store, a bowling alley, barber shop, meat market, saloon pool hall, hardware store and other places. At that time, the business district was comprised on frame buildings. A few weeks later the debris was swept away and the erection of brick buildings, that now form the south side, was underway.
