April is National Slack Off at Work Month. Slack off work! Now who does that? But say for instance, you were going to take a day off, this would be an excellent the time to do it. Winter has passed and those hot, muggy summer days have yet to begin. Who wouldn’t want be outdoors on one of those near perfect days in April? Oh no, the temperature today is only 25 and the wind is gusting to 35 miles per hour. National Slack Off at Work Month has been cancelled this year!

This is National Donate Life Month. This is the month to celebrate those who have donated organs or tissue to help save lives. You are also encouraged to say “YES “ to donation on your drivers license and to tell the members of your family of your wishes.

Thanks to organ and tissue donors, 77 people per day are saved. Unfortunately, 17 to 19 others die while waiting for an organ transplant. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SPRINGFIELD

April 14: 5:30pm - 12:00am - SYAA 3rd Annual Spring Fling $10.00 per person at the Fairgrounds, 4H building. Spend an evening out and enjoy a social hour, silent auction, dinner, and entertainment.

April 16: 6:00 - 9:00pm Springfield Elementary PTO Carnival. Tickets sell 4 for $1.00. Come one, come all for games, food & loads of fun.

April 19- 7:00pm Westmont Kindergarten Concert at Platteview Auditorium.

April 19 - Celebrate National Library Week! Everyone is invited to an Open House at Springfield Memorial Library from 5-7pm.

April 23 8:00pm - Sarpy County Fair Board Meeting.

April 24 7:00pm Springfield Memorial Library Garden Club kicks off the year with a special guest speaker, Anita Eckeley, in the library’s meeting room. All are invited to hear about which roses are designated as Earthkind roses. Find out about the benefits of using roses that required less care and maintainence in your landscape.

May 5 is the date set for the city wide Garage Sale. Gather up all your sale items and register at City Hall.

May 5 & 6 - Friends of the Library Plant Sale at Springcreek Gardens, 122nd & Main St. The sale will run from 9:00am - 3:00pm on Saturday and 12:00 - 3:00pm on Sunday. Entertainment for the kids will begin on both days at 1:30pm. Proceeds from the sale will help purchase replacement computers for the library.

May 19 - Springfield Community Clean Up Day.

Springfield Days 2007 T-shirt Design Contest. Design a t-shirt logo with a pirate theme: Springfield Days: A Hidden Treasure! (dates June 1st and June 2nd ). T-shirt design entries are needed by Monday, April 23rd. Entries can be sent to ssimonsen@esu3.org, mail to: Springfield Days PO Box 184, or drop off at the Springfield Library, 665 Main St. The winner will receive a free t-shirt and $10.00 in Springfield Day’s bucks.

Commemorative Sarpy County Sesquicentennial afghans are now on sale. An afghan is currently on display at Springfield Memorial Library. The cost is $55.00. Order by calling 253-2497, 339-8149, or 339-3584.

Springfield Memorial Library needs teen volunteers for the summer. Young persons ages 12 and over are needed to help Library staff supervise a Summer Reading Tent program one day a week beginning in June. Youth ages 10-12 are needed as reading buddies for younger children. Stop by the library or call 253-2797 to volunteer or for more information.

SPRINGFIELD HISTORICAL TIDBIT:
In the early days, every business house deemed it necessary to have a level sidewalk in front, hence to walk up Main Street it was necessary to climb a succession of stairs with a landing every 50 feet or so.
