What’s New in Springfield, NE

April 18, 2007

Earth Day is celebrated this Sunday, April 22nd. This event is commemorated around the globe and marks the day we recognize the significance of protecting our environment. Many tips on environmental protection can be found on the EPA’s Earth Day website: http://www.epa.gov/earthday/

Arbor Day is also celebrated on April 22nd in observance of J. Sterling Morton’s birthday.
After migrating to Nebraska in 1854 from Detroit, Morton and his wife planted many trees and shrubs on their property. As a journalist, he advocated the planting of trees as windbreaks, for building materials, and for the shade which trees provide. The first Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10, 1872 with more than one million trees planted in Nebraska. In 1885, Arbor Day was officially declared a legal holiday in Nebraska and the date was set for April 22nd. However, the most common day to observe this holiday in other states is the last Friday in April. Plant a tree in remembrance of this Nebraska pioneer and founder of Arbor Day.
