What’s New in Springfield, NE
April 23, 2008
The first Earth Day celebration took place on April 22, 1970 in streets, parks and auditoriums across the United States. In response to a grass roots effort of those concerned about how air pollution, pesticides, and toxic chemicals were effecting our environment, 20 million people gathered to participate in the first ever environmental demonstration known as “Earth Day”. Today people all over the world mark this very first effort to save our environment by planning events that teach us how to care our planet and what each of us can do to contribute to “living green”.
Here are a few tips to help you live a greener life:
- Conserve water by limiting the time spent taking a shower.
- Recycle –junk mail, paper, cell phones, batteries, plastic bags, cans, and more.
- Opt for direct deposit, online banking, and paperless statement, which reduces paper.
- Use rechargeable batteries.
- Bring a set of dishes and utensils to work. Use these in place of disposable products for lunch.
- Instead of disposable water bottles, purchase refillable water bottles.
- Unplug your appliances when you leave the house to conserve energy.
- Try composting, which will create better soil and reduce landfill waste.
- Switch from paper or plastic by bringing reusable totes with you to the store.
Be sure to bring the kids to Springfield Memorial Library on Thursday, April 24 from 3:30-5pm to celebrate Earth Day. Get creative with recyclables and help the planet!
The United Methodist Church is hosting the annual Mother/ Daughter Banquet on Wednesday, May 7 at 6:30 pm. Be sure to make your reservation soon. This annual event has being happening for quite some time. If there is anyone who would like to share details of past Mother/Daughter banquets, please respond by emailing to the link below. Your remembrances will be shared in future issues of this newsletter. Here is a copy of an article from the Springfield Monitor, May 8, 1958 of the Mother /Daughter Banquet held that year.
Adventures in Baking—Fellow quilt class member, Christie Stoddard started it all. She brought these yummy, gooey rolls to share during the library’s Quilt Class lunch. Of course, we all wanted this recipe. Nancy Davis, library assistant extraordinaire, also has similar recipe. She would generously tempt me by bringing these rolls to work. Oh the pleasure, but not too good for my hips and thighs!!! Finally, I decided I must make these luscious rolls for my family. First off I cannot find my recipe, but I proceed to buy the ingredients anyway. Then I cry and Nancy brings her recipe. Ok, now I can make them, only to discover that I should have purchased Cook & Serve pudding not the instant kind. But I really, really need to make these rolls, so I proceed ahead anyway. This turned out not to be my best idea! That day after discovering my failed attempt my lovely daughter called me at work asking, “What were you trying to make Mom? It looks like a disaster on a plate.” She also added, so nicely, that she knows that I can bake better than that! Thank you to a kind and thoughtful daughter!! Maybe she deserves a night at the Mother/Daughter banquet.
