There are lots going on in Springfield! Clean up, plant flowers, garage sales, festivals, end of the year school events, sports, and the list goes on and on. Don’t forget Mother’s Day is soon approaching! Buy Mom a gift in Springfield…there’s any number of places to pick one up. Enjoy the weather and look here for a fun event to attend.

 

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SPRINGFIELD

May 3rd - 7:00pm Springfield and Westmont honor choir and sixth grade band concert at Platteview High School Auditorium.

May 5 is the date set for the citywide Garage Sale. Gather up all your sale items and register at City Hall.

May 5 - Friends of the Library Plant Sale at Springcreek Gardens, 122nd & Main St. The sale will run from 9:00am - 3:00pm. Activities for the kids will begin at 1:30pm. Proceeds from the sale will help purchase replacement computers for the library.

May 8 - 11:30am Senior Brown Bag Lunch at Springfield Memorial Library

May 8 - Springfield Elementary Runza Night

May 12 - 12:00 - 9:00pm Spring Wine and Blues Festival at Soaring Wings Vineyard. Tickets just $25 for 21 and older, $20 for 12-20, and free for under 12 for all day music.

May 13 - Mother’s Day

May 13 - 1:00pm Platteview High Graduation. Congratulations, seniors!!!

May 14 - Summer Reading Program registration begins at Springfield Memorial Library. Kids sign up to read during the summer. Win a free book & mystery prize.
The theme this year is Get A Clue @ Your Library. Lots of fun activities are planned throughout the summer months.

May 19 - Springfield Community Clean Up Day. Bring your discarded items to the lot behind the city’s Maintenance Shop.

May 19 & 20 - Third annual Spring Art Festival at Weiss Studios and Gardens, 13603 Pflug Rd. Enjoy the spring flowers, art & music. Open Saturday, 10:00am - 6:00pm and Sunday, 11:00am - 5:00pm.

Springfield Memorial Library needs teen volunteers for the summer. Young persons ages 12 and over are needed to help Library staff supervise a Summer Reading Tent program one day a week beginning in June. Youth ages 10-12 are needed as reading buddies for younger children. Call 253-2797 or stop by the library to volunteer.

From the diary of L.A. Bates published in the Springfield Monitor 1932:
Sunday May 2, 1909 – The thermometer still was below freezing. The ice is nearly an inch thick on the north side of the house.
