What’s New in Springfield, NE

May 16, 2007

School vacation begins this week. Kids are happy. Teachers are breathing a sigh of relief. Parents are worried…now your children are home for a whole three months! How do you keep them occupied? Swim lessons, baseball games, summer school, camp, vacation, chores, and lots of fun activities. It’s also a good time just to do a little hanging out. Slow down and enjoy the time away from that hectic schedule of the school year.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated Saturday, May 19. President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the Department of Defense. Let us show support to all members of the armed forces. Thanks to the men and women serving our country.

SPRINGFIELD HISTORICAL TIDBIT:
Joseph Money Elwell, Jr. began his hardware business on May 1, 1886,. He was an active business man, taking part in all of the community projects. His business has seen the lean years and the fat years, but through it all a policy of the best service possible has meant that there had been a steady climb upward in popularity and success.
