What’s New in Springfield, NE

June 6, 2007

On this day in history, the Allied Forces began it’s invasion in Europe. The year was 1944 and years of planning prepared the military forces for one of the largest invasions of air, land, and sea operations before or since June 6, 1944. The landing included over 5,000 ships, 11,000 airplanes, and over 150,000 service men. Although suffering nearly 10,000 causalities with 4,000 dead, the Allied forces broke the grip of the Nazi’s stronghold in Europe. By August, all of northern France had been liberated and reorganized of the military’s invasion into Germany was being planned. Let us remember those who lost their lives on this important day in history.

SPRINGFIELD HISTORICAL TIDBIT:
In 1882, Uncle Jimmie Davidson of Platford built as an investment the “The Rodger’s House” and leased it to Mr. and Mrs. Dell Rodgers, who immediately opened a first-class country hotel. The crowning event of the new town and it’s citizens was the grand opening of that hostelry - a six o’clock dinner.
