Congratulations to Keith Hentzen, owner of Springfield Drug. On Thursday June 21st, Keith celebrated 30 years of being in business on the corner of 2nd & Main in downtown Springfield. And we can not forget about the old fashioned Soda Fountain, where many an ice cream has been consumed. We hope to see the Springfield Drug & Soda Fountain in business for thirty more good years!
 Vacation Bible School was held at the First United Methodist Church in Springfield by approximately ninety children last week. “Soaring to New heights with God” was the theme this year. Children attended sessions for three days last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. A special Sunday service ended Vacation Bible School with a program and refreshments.

Fireworks stands are popping up every where in Springfield and surrounding towns in preparation for the Fourth of July. Selling fireworks provide local non -profit organizations fundraising opportunities. Please remember these safety tips from the Consumer Product Safety Commission:
- Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks
- Read and follow all warnings and instructions
- Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
- Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials.
- Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned.
- Keep a bucket of water in case of a malfunction or fire.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SPRINGFIELD “Get a Clue at Your Library” programs are held on Monday at Springfield Memorial Library. Preschool Storytime begins at 9:30. Elementary ages are invited for Story & Craft Time from 1:00 - 2:00pm. The Summer Reading Tent is open every Thursday morning from 9-12. Drop in to read or check out books. Special library programs:
Monday July 23, 1:00pm- Peter the Nears Magic Show and Ice Cream Social
Thursday July 26, 10:00am – NE Game and Parks Fishing Clinic
Cake Decorating classes are now forming. Instructor Christy Carman will teach attendees to decorate cakes! Classes will be held at the Springfield United Methodist Church on July 10, 12, 17, & 19 from 6 -8pm. Sponsored by Michaels and the Springfield United Methodist Church, fees for the class will be offered at the low price of $26.41($25.00, class +$.01, kit = $1.40, tax). Find registration forms around town.
Vacation Bible School at St. Joseph’s Church will be held July 9th - 13th. Please register early to assure a spot for your child. Forms can be found at the back of the church.

SPRINGFIELD HISTORICAL TIDBIT:
In 1887 Springfield helped to organize a Sarpy County baseball league. The first game played on Springfield grounds, as all of them were, was between the Fairview and Springfield clubs. The final score resulting 23 to 7 in favor of Fairview.
