What’s New in Springfield, NE
July 4th, 2007
On July 4, 1776 the Second Continental Congress voted to adopt the Declaration of Independence. By signing this document, the American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. The original document is stored in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. This important day in our history is traditionally celebrated with parades, fireworks, and picnics.
July is National Ice Cream month. In 1984 President Ronald Reagan designated July as the month to enjoy this sweet treat. Now we have a good excuse to trot on over to the Springfield Soda Fountain to order an ice cream cone, malt or, my favorite, an ice cream soda. The Springfield Cemetery‘s entrance has moved to south end of the cemetery’s property with the widening of Highway 50. The old entrance is now fenced in and not accessible. The cemetery was first established soon after the town was founded. The deed was recorded on September 7, 1882. The Springfield Cemetery Association maintains the property. A complete index and map of burials is available at the Springfield Memorial Library or from the cemetery association, although earlier burials are incomplete due to the destruction of records during fire of March 19, 1903.
