Are you surviving the summer heat? Since we are now sweltering with temps in the high 90’s, it’s time to review those summer safety heat related tips:
- Dress for the heat. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's energy. It is also a good idea to wear hats or to use an umbrella.
- Drink water. Carry water or juice with you and drink continuously even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the body.
- Eat small meals and eat more often. Avoid foods that are high in protein, which increase metabolic heat.
- Slow down. Avoid strenuous activity. If you must do strenuous activity, do it during the coolest part of the day, which is usually in the morning between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.
- Stay indoors when possible.
Rain, glorious rain! It was great to waking up to that sound last Monday. With hardly a drop for a month, we needed any amount of moisture that we could get. Our rain gauge read approximately 1/3 inch. I also heard of a report of nearly ½ in. near here. The corn and beans will be much better off now, we hope. Anyway, the corn around here was more than knee-high by the fourth of July. So, we’re hoping for an abundant crop.
Thank you to Brian and Marcie Tracy for providing each Springfield residence a flag for our July 4th celebration.
On no! Bunnies are attacking my garden! Here are few suggestions if this is happening to you too:
- Get a ferret (a first-class rabbit-chaser) or beg some ferret droppings from a pet shop or ferret-owning friend, and spread the droppings around your plants.
- Plant repellent species in and around the rabbits' targets. Good choices include Mexican marigolds, dusty miller, garlic and onions.
- Fill 1-gallon (4-l) glass bottles with water and set them among your plants. Sunlight bouncing off the glass will startle the bunnies and send them fleeing.
- Fill cloth pouches with cat, dog or human hair and distribute them among your plants.
I am really not too keen on that first suggestion. I don’t think I’ll be adding a ferret as one of our household pets!
Horse lovers rejoice! The new Equestrian Trail is now open adjacent to the MoPac Trail south of Pflug Rd. Local area resident Vicki Fraser, chairman of the Equestrian Advisory Committee to the Papio-MO NRD, was instrumental in obtaining this new horse trail. Riders are advised to observe regulations that are posted along the trial. The Nebraska Horse Council’s Nebraska Horse Trail Committee is an excellent source for information. Happy Riding!!

We just happened to catch Vicki out for a ride on her horse.
