What’s New in Springfield, NE

July 18, 2007

It’s hot, hot, hot! This week we are experiencing a Nebraska July, in all its glory, with our hot and humid weather. So, how do we cool off? Swimming is a perfect choice. Drive to nearby pools at one of the state parks or close towns. A kiddy pool in the backyard might work. Stick your feet in one of those just after filling it up and you’ll usually feel pretty refreshed. How about running through the sprinkler? I’m sure my neighbors would enjoy that spectacle!

It’s fascinating to watch hot air balloons as they float across the early morning or evening sky. We are fortunate from time to time to see beautiful balloons in our area. One of those occasions was last week. Local resident, Bridget White captured these pictures near the Riha residence:

August 2- 4 A special hot air ballooning event will take place during the Sarpy County Fair & Sesquicentennial celebration:
*9:00 PM Thursday & Friday evening Balloon Glows at the Fairground
*Saturday - Sarpy County 150th Anniversary Balloon launch from Fairgrounds - Time will be announced Friday evening

July is National Baked Bean Month. The state of Michigan leads the nation in the production of dry edible beans. About 90% of the beans grown in Michigan are canned. Since cookouts and barbecues are popular this month, it’s a good time to add baked beans to your menu and celebrate beans in July.

By the way, it is also National Hot Dog Month. So there’s your menu, folks, hot dogs and beans. Add some cole slaw. Yum! Yum! (Could it also be National Cole Slaw Month?)
