What’s New in Springfield, NE
August 22, 2007
We are now more than half way into a hot and very muggy August. Recent rains have added to what has been an already a sultry summer. I hate to complain about rain but less humidity does make it easier to enjoy being outside. And the locusts are so noisy! How did we ever survive without air conditioning! I remember growing up in the no air conditioning days. We stayed indoors in the afternoon with all the shades closed and rested since it was so hot. We played outdoors only in the morning or at night when it was cooler. Dad taught us to put cold water or ice on our wrists to cool off. Somehow, we also got used to sleeping to the tune of the noisy bugs.
Let’s celebrate! Its National Catfish Month! In honor of this occasion, take the family out to fish for catfish or invite family and friends over for a catfish cookout. Check out the National Catfish Institutes’ website for great recipes and a host of information on catfish: http://www.catfishinstitute.com/ The Springfield Memorial Library held a Fishing Clinic on July 26th. Greg Hartel and Jason Faust from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission instructed children on the fine art of fishing in Nebraska. Learning to cast a fishing rod was a highlight of this program. Kids and parents also learned all about the kinds of fish in Nebraska lakes and rivers. By the way, catfish are available in Nebraska fishing waters.

SPRINGFIELD HISTORICAL TIDBIT:
Springfield’s first girl’s basket ball team was in 1912. In 1926, basketball was considered too strenuous an activity for the physical well being of girls, so it was discontinued. Basketball was reinstated as a competitive sport for girls in the 1972-73 school year.
