What’s New in Springfield, NE

August 29, 2007

The end of the summer season is in sight with the upcoming Labor Day weekend. For many it is the last time to get away for a long weekend of summer fun. Say farewell to summer with a camping trip, a visit to a festival, a Labor Day Parade, or host a picnic with family and friends.

National Toasted Marshmallow Day is celebrated Thursday, August 30th. Each summer more than 50% of all marshmallows sold are toasted. So, get your fire going, find those marshmallow toasting sticks and toast some marshmallows. Or you can just do as I do and turn on that stove top burner and toast some right in your very own kitchen (shh, don’t tell my husband ).

Springfield Memorial Library announced the winners of the Summer Reading Contest. A reading challenge was held to see who could read the most books in three reading level categories. The winners received a Board Game and a certificate. Easy Book level winner: Louden Ferguson, reading 100 books. Chapter Book level winner: Susan Sherman, reading 53 books. Young Adult level winner: Jamie Wenzl, reading 15 books. Congratulations! And kudos to all the kids who read this summer!

SPRINGFIELD HISTORICAL TIDBIT:
On August 30, 1925 a fire swept through Kieck’s Grocery Store making a complete rebuilding necessary. The Kieck Store never failed to hold a high place in the minds of the people of the community. In those days of long ago, one gave their order for groceries needed to a clerk who filled it. He then readied it for loading into a wagon, buggy, or car, whatever the case might have been. Payment was made when the order was ready by cash, credit, or trade for butter, chickens or other farm products.
