What’s New in Springfield, NE

October 24, 2007

Happy Halloween! It’s almost time to celebrate this festive holiday with costumes, jack- o-lanterns, and trick or treating. Here is some interesting trivia about Halloween:

    • Halloween was originally a Celtic holiday celebrated on October 31.
    • Halloween was brought to North America by immigrants from Europe who celebrated the harvest by sitting around a bonfire sharing ghost stories, singing, dancing, and telling fortunes.
    • Pumpkins originated in Central America. When Europeans arrived in the New World, they found pumpkins plentiful and used in cooking by Native Americans. They took the seeds back to Europe where they quickly became popular.
    • There are no words in the dictionary that rhyme with the word orange, the color of pumpkins.
    • According to folklore the jack-o-lantern got its name from a man named Jack.
    • Turnips and beets served as the first jack-o-lanterns.
    • Halloween is the second most commercially successful day. Christmas is the first. Average sales for Halloween are over $2.5 billion spent for candy, costumes, decorations and parties.
    • It is believed that the Irish, began the tradition of Trick or Treating. In preparation for All Hallows Eve, Irish town folk would visit neighbors and ask for contributions for a feast in town.
