What’s New in Springfield, NE

November 7, 2007

Veteran’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, November 11th. Historically this day was first observed November, 1919 after World War I. Fighting ceased between countries involved in the war on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month in 1918. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day. By an act of Congress in 1954, the word “Armistice” was changed to “Veterans” to honor American veterans of all wars. On October 26, 2007 the United States Senate passed a resolution designating the week of November 11 through November 17, 2007, as “National Veterans Awareness Week” to emphasize the need to develop educational programs regarding the contributions of veterans to the country.

Pay tribute to local veterans by attending Platteview High School’s annual Veteran’s Day celebration on Monday, November 12 at 9:00pm. The public is welcome.

Needed: Pictures of current members of the military for a display at the Springfield Memorial Library.
Drop off pictures or mail to 665 Main Street, Box 40, Springfield, NE 6809. The library would like to recognize the contributions made by local service men or women to our country.

Who did we see parading down Main Street on Halloween afternoon? It was the annual Springfield Elementary students Trick or Treating Parade down Main Street. Was that a gorilla we saw? Goblins, princesses, pirates, cowboys, fairies, and more were spotted out and about. Hope you all got lots of treats!
