What’s New in Springfield, NE

December 05, 2007

2An ice storm hampered the area last Saturday. Springfield streets and sidewalks looked similar to ice skating rinks. Walking was especially treacherous for those who were courageous enough to venture outside. Did you know it is not good for you to traipse on your grass when it is covered with frost or ice? So my hubby informs me when I back out with my minivan and accidently venture too far off the driveway.  Well I did not care one iota about my lawn when choosing between next year’s green turf or the thought of breaking my bones.  And since we live in the constantly weather changing state of Nebraska, by Saturday night the temps climbed into the balmy 50’s. Thank goodness that ice storm left in a great big hurry!
I noticed that Friday night events were already being cancelled for the next day. Are you an optimist and hoping for the best? Or would you say it’s pessimistic to predict that the weather forecasters would all be wrong and that the coming ice storm would miss our area? I was faithfully praying that no freezing rain would fall, no icy drizzle or snow to hamper the next day’s Library Cookie Walk. Alas it was not to be!  We cancelled the annual Friends of the Library Cookie Walk but some brave souls ventured out and brought cookies.  So we opened up for business that wintry morning but of course many folks did not want to risk coming out. The Cookie Walk will be held again next Saturday, December 8  from 3pm -5pm. Cookie donations can brought to the library Thursday 2-7pm or Saturday 9am-1pm. By the way for folks that don’t know this… in my other life I am Director of the Springfield Memorial Library, the greatest profession in the world.

The Springfielder at Heart Dinner is being held this coming Saturday at the First United Methodist Social Hall. Everyone is invited to share a delicious meal and fellowship from 5:00 – 8:00pm.  The dinner is free for all who attend but donations will be accepted. All contributions are to be shared between the three churches in Springfield. Please plan to attend and support this worthy cause. And just who will the Springfielder at Heart be?
