What’s New in Springfield, NE

December 19, 2007

It’s the countdown to Christmas. With the hustle and bustle of the season remember to slow down and ponder a bit. Reflect on the blessing in your life and embrace ones you love. Sometimes it is all too easy to be cynical in these trying times, with the political season upon us and the feeling that we may all be going down the tubes, according to the news reports each night. But then I see a nice young man ringing a bell in the very cold night collecting money for folks who don’t have so much and I read in the paper about a family who is so grateful and worked so hard for a new home from Habitat for Humanity. An airman from Offutt went above and beyond the usual Christmas project and collected an additional $850 for a needy family. That family then, in turn, used part of the money to donate to the Food Pantry. Springfield kindergarteners collected 76 pairs of mittens for kids who need them. This is truly the season for caring about one another and it still shows.

From Brenda Sherman, Springfield resident, who is making a difference in our world:

The Westroads Shooting has left us devastated. In light of this devastation, let us come together to make a positive difference. On Saturday, December 29 from 9a - 9p our home will be open for an all day crop. There are 10 available spaces and the cost is a free will donation. Come for all day or part of the day and contribute based on what you feel led. There will be product for sale and available to order. All profit and free will crop fees from the day will be donated to the Victims Fund. Snacks, meals and drinks will not be provided so feel free to bring your own. Please pass this on to anyone that might be interested. Also, if you can't crop, stop by to purchase some items as those sales will be included. God Bless your Christmas Season and thanks for making a difference in your corner of the world!!!

Clean fabric is also needed. To donate fabric or for more information call the church office at 253-2270.

Arro, ruman.

Look who knocked over the Christmas tree at our house. Yes, it’s Oscar a very big, naughty 9 month old puppy who thinks he’s small. Isn’t he cute?

A visitor walked into Springfield last Thursday and I literally mean “walked”. Mike Daniel is hiking across the country following the American Discovery Trail to film a documentary and raise money for the American Heart Association. His path takes him along the MoPac trail here in this part of Nebraska. While in Springfield, Mike ventured into the Library, visited Springfield Drug store to take pictures of the Simpson display (our claim to fame?), and ate at the Runza Restaurant. He sampled one of those famous Runza sandwiches. Pastor Eldon and Nancy Davis of the United Methodist Church put him up for the night, took him to breakfast the next morning, and drove him to the MoPac trail at Elmwood since the trail near Louisville and South Bend was closed. You may follow Mike’s trek at his website: http://www.walkingwithfreedom.com/

The annual Christmas tree in the middle of Main Street has once again made its appearance. How in the world does it get there?

Santa visited Runza Restaurant Monday, December 17th from 5:30 – 7:00pm. Everyone got a chance to tell Santa what they want for Christmas.

Don’t forget to take the kids to the annual “Meet with Santa” at the Community Building. This long time tradition is put on by the Springfield Volunteer Fire Dept. It has been a number of years that we have had little ones to take to this event, but I recall the noisy fun and excitement and the great big bag of treats given to each child. Thank you to the Firefighters for your generosity!
