Happy First day of School!
HEY SPRINGFIELD! Scream it out — HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!
School is back! Now, I know summer technically isn’t over yet, but it sure feels like it when the school buses are rolling, kids are heading back to class, and the community starts getting back into its school-year routine.
I’ve also noticed there have been quite a few new hires at Springfield Platteview Community Schools, and we already know what an amazing school district we have right here in our community. So, let’s send out some good old-fashioned prayers for an amazing, safe, successful, and positive 2026–2027 school year!
To all the teachers, administrators, staff, bus drivers, parents, and especially the students — we’re cheering you on! Make this a great year!
BACK-TO-SCHOOL NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY REMINDER
As our kids head back to school, it’s also a good time for parents to have a quick conversation about e-bike and bicycle safety, especially around driveways and parked vehicles.
I recently read a scary situation happen in Springfield neighborhoods For example, someone was was backing out of their driveway when a child came flying down the sidewalk on an electric bike. They were moving so quickly and came up behind their vehicle before she had a chance to see them. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but it was a very close call.
Please remind kids to slow down around driveways and parked cars, watch carefully for vehicles backing out, and remember that drivers may not always be able to see them. E-bikes can move surprisingly fast, and children can be difficult to see from a vehicle.
Let’s all slow down, pay attention, and look out for one another as the new school year begins.

Springfield History
The 1982 Platteview Central Jr. High student council members engaged in a variety of
activities beyond simply attending meetings. As noted by their sponsor, Holly Nielsen,
during the 1981-1982 school year, the council organized three dances, awarded outstanding teacher honors to John McGill, ran the General Store, procured school supplies using Campbell Soup labels, sold wrapping paper, and contributed to a scholarship fund. In addition to these events, council members played a vital role in the school open house by offering tours of the building and even visited elementary schools for sixth-grade orientation. Their efforts made a meaningful impact on the school community.

Did You Know?
Springfield got its name from its springs!
Springfield was founded by Captain J. D. Spearman, who purchased 160 acres in 1873 after learning the Missouri Pacific Railroad would be coming through the area. He laid out the village and named it Springfield because of the numerous springs found nearby. One of those historic springs has actually been preserved along Highway 50.
The town officially began life on October 1, 1881, and by its first birthday in 1882, Springfield had a population of about 300 people.
Today, Springfield has grown quite a bit, but that history—and the community spirit that built this town—is still part of what makes Springfield special
