Springfield Wednesday Newsletter -July 15

WELCOME BACK!

Hey Springfield, It's the third week of July, and BOY, you might have heard the term "heat dome" thrown around a lot. If you're anything like me, you may be wondering, "What's a heat dome... and how do we pop it?"

Bad news: You can't pop it. I checked. The good news? It doesnt last long.

A heat dome happens when a large area of high pressure settles over a region, trapping hot air like a lid on a pot. Day after day, the sun keeps heating the ground, but that hot air has nowhere to go. The result? Hotter temperatures, higher humidity, and very little relief.

Screenshot 2026 07 13 085549

That appears to be exactly what the Springfield area is headed into this week. Expect several days with temperatures climbing into the 90s, with some locations flirting with 100°F by the weekend. Add Nebraska humidity, and it could feel even hotter. Forecasters are urging everyone to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, and check on neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the heat. Stay Cool Springfield! With that being said...

Buffalo Park Splash Pad Update

We know these hot days have many of you wishing the splash pad was open. Unfortunately, we are still waiting on the replacement control panel from the manufacturer due to shipping delays. City staff continues to check in regularly and is ready to install it as soon as it arrives.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we work to get Buffalo Park Splash Pad back up and running. We’ll share an update as soon as it’s ready!

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream! July is National Ice Cream Month, making it the perfect excuse to treat yourself. Just one small favor... don't actually scream at the Springfield Ice Cream Shop—they're just trying to scoop your favorite flavor! Stop by, cool off, and enjoy a sweet taste of summer. Open Wednesday–Saturday, 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Pickleball at the Community Building

It may be hot outside, but it's cool inside! Give pickleball a try. It's easy to learn, great exercise, and a lot more fun than arguing over who gets the TV remote.

If you've never played before, now's the perfect time to grab a paddle, hit the court, and have some fun with friends or family.

Spots are limited, so you'll need to reserve a one-hour time slot in advance. Participants must be 19 or older, and registration requires a Facility Use Agreement, liability waiver, and a copy of your ID.

Springfield History

Springfield's Centennial Celebration Parade

One of the most significant parades in Springfield's 100-year history took place
during the two-day Centennial celebration. On Saturday, July 3, 1982, the Grand
Parade featured ninety-two entries. Local service clubs, churches, and businesses
were accompanied by neighboring towns, fire departments, Shriners, school bands,
and aspiring politicians. A fantastic crowd gathered to witness the Centennial
Grand Parade.

 Fit Tip of the Week

Protein, Protein, Protein!

Chicken has quietly become America's favorite meat, with consumption more than tripling since the 1960s. It's packed with high-quality protein to help build and repair muscles, keeps you feeling full longer, and is a great source of B vitamins, selenium, and phosphorus.

With the summer heat, a cold chicken salad sounds pretty good!

Simple Healthy Chicken Salad

  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded or diced
  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • ¼ cup grapes, halved (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped pecans or almonds (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Mix everything together and chill for at least 30 minutes. Serve on whole-grain bread, in a wrap, over lettuce, or with whole-grain crackers. It's an easy, high-protein lunch that's perfect for a hot summer day!
