Springfield Wednesday Newsletter - December 10th

Welcome to Cookie week!

Hey Springfield its Holiday Cookie Extravaganza —

Springfield, we’ve rolled right into the second week of December — and you know what that means…
It’s COOKIE WEEK!

That’s right! It’s time to preheat those ovens, sprinkle some sugar, and show some love to our amazing library. Whether you bake, buy, or (like me!) do both, your sweet creations help make the season extra bright.

Holiday Cookie Extravaganza
Saturday, December 13th
9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Springfield Library

Walk into a room where tables are overflowing — and I mean overflowing — with every Christmas cookie you can imagine. You grab a bag, fill it with your favorites, leave a donation, and boom: you’ve just supported one of the most magical places in town.

This simple, sweet fundraiser keeps our amazing Springfield Library buzzing with events, programs, and all the community fun we love.

Got a sweet tooth?
Then you absolutely cannot miss this. It’s the BEST cookie day of the year at the library — and yes, every kind of Christmas cookie will be there waiting for you!

See you Saturday — I’ll be the one juggling a plate of cookies in each hand!

Cold Weather Apparel
Please be reminded, we will go outside each day, weather permitting. It is very important
that your child arrives at school dressed for colder weather. We do have a few winter weather
items here in the office, however, sending your child with these items is very helpful.

Every year the Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph's Church in Springfield very generously donates coats for children who need them. The cold weather is right around the corner, and we do go to recess outside every day, weather permitting. It gets cold, and every student needs and
deserves a warm coat, hat and gloves. Please plan ahead and check your closets to see what needs you have. Contact me to make arrangements for coats. I will need to know each child's age and size. We keep all requests confidential and discreetly get the coats to you. Please do not
hesitate to either call or email me at 402-895-9602 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
PLEASE do not hesitate to request coats
if needed! Thank you!

Local Business Update

Who made it to It’s Small Business Saturday – Take 2 last weekend?

I had so much fun! I picked up snowman hand-painted wine glasses for a gift exchange and Christmas tree earrings from Robin Nest. Stopped by Keith’s—they’ve been busy, and the history in those brick-and-wood stores is amazing.

Next, Springfield Art Works—Margie was sparkling in red, and her store has one-of-a-kind treasures. I got a cute kitchen towel.

This weekend, Main Street Decor & More has Santa visiting, so grab cookies from the library and you still have time to get on the Nice list!

BIG NEWS!

Mickey’s Tavern is OFFICIALLY OPEN!! Visit them!

It's Springfield History

When JoAnn Ostransky was a young girl, an elderly neighbor gifted her a European Santa doll bank. This present sparked a lifelong passion for collecting Santa Claus memorabilia. By 1986,
JoAnn had amassed over one hundred Santas, with most of her collection being gifts from family, friends, and neighbors. Often, a Santa was acquired during someone's travels when theyencountered a unique find. To keep her collection organized, JoAnn cataloged each Santa by number, date received, and the person who gave it to her. Some of her remarkable items include Santa figures such as Hawaiian, West German, hook rug creations, music boxes, Coca-Cola glasses, clocks, ashtrays, and dolls. JoAnn was a long-time resident of the Springfield area, where she taught in rural schools before marrying Fred Ostransky and becoming a farm wife.
After raising her three children, she transitioned to a role as a substitute teacher with theSpringfield-Platteview schools. JoAnn always embraced the significance of Christ's birth and
Christmas but also believed that Santa played a role in the Christmas season.Fairgrounds Tree

Insurance Tip– Put the phone down but use it for a discount.

Drive Safe and Save!

Did you know cell phones are one of the biggest causes of accidents on the road? With Farmers Insurance, we encourage drivers to use the Signal® app, which promotes safer driving—and can even earn you extra savings on your policy.

For teen drivers, many insurance companies offer discounts when students complete Driver Ed. At Farmers, we go a step further—we won’t rate your teen driver at all! That’s huge savings for your family, while your student gains essential safe driving skills. Right now, we’re beating prices like crazy!

A Sweet Tradition: Cookies for Santa
The tradition of leaving cookies started in medieval Europe, where treats were offered to guests as a warm welcome. By the 1800s, European immigrants brought it to the U.S., and over time it became the holiday custom we know and love—leaving a plate of cookies and a glass of milk for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.

It’s a small gesture that spreads big joy… and a little extra magic for Santa.

Ho Ho Ho, he definitely approves!
