Dear Springfield Community,
Welcome to another edition of the Springfield Wednesday Newsletter!
As we gather once again to explore the vibrant pulse of our community, let's start with a Reminder...
Daylight saving time for 2024 is just around the corner, set to begin on Sunday, March 10 at 2 a.m. local time. It's that wonderful time of year when our clocks spring forward one hour, marking the onset of longer days and the promise of spring.
This twice-annual time change is a familiar ritual for many Americans, signaling the arrival of warmer weather and new beginnings. So, don't forget to adjust your clocks and embrace the extra daylight ahead!

It Happened in Springfield: A Community Chronicle
On March 11, 1978, a significant event took place at Springfield American Legion Post 143 with the official dedication ceremony of their renovated facility. The previous year, the Post had moved into the building located at 166 South 2nd Street. Despite the chilly weather on that Saturday afternoon, a large number of people gathered to attend the short outdoor dedication ceremony and open house.
The master of ceremonies, Post Commander Louis Riha, led the proceedings and introduced distinguished guests. Members of the Color Guard, including Elden Nielsen, Henry Lorenz, and Maurice Erhart, presented the advancement of colors. The Platteview Pep Band performed the National Anthem, adding to the solemnity of the occasion. Floyd Helwig, the post chaplain, delivered a heartfelt invocation, setting the tone for the ceremony.
Merle Von Minden, the Commander of the American Legion in the area, graced the event as the guest speaker, sharing words of wisdom and inspiration with those in attendance. The dedication concluded with a benediction and the retiring of colors, marking the completion of a memorable and significant day in the history of Springfield American Legion Post 143.
In the second photo (Legion1), we see Area A Commander, Merle Von Minden being greeted by Legionnaire Howard Schneekloth, alongside Post Commander Louis Riha. It's a snapshot capturing the camaraderie and respect shared among members of the Legion community.
