It Happened in Springfield
Photo: 1989 Springfield Cemetery entrance sign
The Grave of an Unknown Soldier at Springfield Memorial Cemetery
The grave of an unknown soldier rests at Springfield Memorial Cemetery. In 1969, the Springfield Monitor newspaper published an account from former resident Howard Freeman, recalling an event from when he was just nine years old. During the summer of 1893, Nebraska and Kansas suffered a severe drought, homesteaders flocked eastward in covered wagons,
passing through Springfield and Papillion throughout the day.
Two of these wagons chose to camp behind the Springfield Methodist Church. That night, a thunderstorm swept through the area. The wife of a critically ill man sought the assistance of Rev. William Underwood to bring her husband inside the church. Sadly, he passed away. The
family, which included several children were destitute, prompting the town's residents to rally together, providing clothing and food. Upon the wife presenting papers indicating her husband was a Civil War veteran and a member of the GAR, local veterans in and around Springfield
took charge of the funeral arrangements. Rev. Underwood led the services in a church filled to capacity. Local Civil War veterans donned their uniforms and marched alongside the wagon carrying the coffin to Springfield Cemetery. The cemetery service featured taps played by Ike
DePew and a musket squad firing shots in honor of the deceased. The family of the veteran departed the following day for a destination in Iowa. Shortly after, a government marker was placed at the head of the soldier’s grave.
Years before the 1969 newspaper article was released, a member of the Springfield American Legion inquired about the identity of the unknown soldier buried in the eastern section of the cemetery. Legion members had always honored the grave on Memorial Day but were curious
about the veteran's identity. The account shared by Mr. Freeman assisted Legion members in learning how of the Civil War veteran came to be buried in Springfield Cemetery. We pay tribute to the commitment of veterans from the Springfield area who have honored the grave of the Unknown Soldier.

Fit Tip of the Week - Getting Back on Track After Halloween
Let’s be honest — Halloween week isn’t always our healthiest! But you don’t need to detox or “make up for it.” Just get back to your normal habits FAST:
- Eat real food
- Stay hydrated
- Move your body
- Get good sleep
One weekend doesn’t undo your progress. It might slow things down a bit, but hey — you had fun and got a little dopamine boost. The key is consistency, not perfection.
Of course, that’s unless you’re about to step on stage or compete in a fitness challenge — then timing matters a bit more! Get back on Track!
Take a break from heavy meals and give your body something nourishing and light — you’ll thank me later!
Ingredients:
- 1 large sweet onion, finely chopped
- 2–3 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 large carrots, peeled and shredded
- 1 large parsnip, peeled and shredded
- 3 celery stalks, sliced
- 2 red bell peppers, diced
- ½ small cabbage, chopped
- 2 cups green beans (fresh or frozen), cut bite-size
- 1 Tbsp avocado or olive oil
- 7–8 cups bone broth
- Sea salt & black pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped
A warm, simple soup like this helps you reset, refuel, and feel lighter without missing out on flavor.

Veterans Day History
Veterans Day is observed each year on November 11 to honor all men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
The holiday began as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I when the fighting ceased on November 11, 1918. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress renamed it Veterans Day to recognize veterans of all wars.
Today, we pause to thank and honor those who have served — past and present — for their courage, dedication, and sacrifice. Takes a lot to be Brave! Thank you!
