AMERICAN LEGION FLAG RETIREMENT CEREMONY
When the American Flag becomes soiled, faded, ripped or tattered and torn it must be retired and the proper method is for it to be burned. This honor and privilege falls to a very select group and the American Legion is one of these groups.
June 14 is Flag Day and is an ideal time to fly the flag and to inspect your flag. If it is determined to be the time to replace the flag you can drop off the old ones at the drop box (an old mail box) on the right side of the Springfield Legion building. At our meeting on June 21 we will hold a retirement ceremony for all flags received. This ceremony is open to the public, and we welcome school children as well as adults to witness this. The ceremony will start at 7:00 P.M. behind the Legion Hall in Springfield.

Springfield ArtWorks will have a booth at the Omaha Quilt show at the Lavista Conference Center at 12520 Westport Pkwy, Lavista at the Intersection of I-80 & Giles Road, Exit 442, this weekend. The event will be held Friday, June 18th, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, June 19th, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, June 20th, 10am to 2 pm. ArtWorks will have their wool, felting kits, and other felting supplies available as well as finished felted hats and scarves, felted animals, art quilts, silk batik, painted scarves and quilt cards.

Dear Survivors,
I'm writing to extend an invitation to participate in the American Cancer Society 2010 Relay for Life of Cass County. It will take place on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Plattsmouth High School. The planning of this annual event, which is in its 15th year, begins a month after the previous Relay. It’s a huge undertaking but a labor of love for all of our committee members. We want to help the American Cancer Society help all of you and your families in so many ways.
As cancer survivors you are what the Relay For Life is all about - you all are basically the "heart" of it and the reason we all work so hard to make it better every year. I became increasingly involved over the last several years because of my history with cancer (I'm a two time breast cancer survivor -and very proud of it!). Some of my fellow committee members are also survivors and of course we have all been touched by cancer involving loved ones as well.
What I'm asking of you is simple. Please plan to attend the Relay even if only for a short time. We need the opportunity to honor you with a survivor dinner at 5:30 PM (one caregiver for each survivor is also invited) and the celebratory survivor lap at 7 PM which is the start of the twelve hour event. I consider it a privilege to walk alongside all of you. Our goal is to honor 100 (men, women & children) survivors this year. Please keep in mind, we are not limited to only Cass County residents. We are reaching out to survivors near and far.
I ask that you either call our American Cancer Society Staff Partner, Megan Maryott at 1-402-393-5801 X70770 or logon to www.relayforlife.org/casscone and select "Sign Up As A Survivor" and complete the registration - there is no charge for survivors. We are running out of time so please do it soon. If necessary you can register at the Relay that evening too!
