ATV DRIVING SAFETY COURSE OFFERED
All Terrain Vehicle safety is a paramount issue in Nebraska, and one on which University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension is taking action.  In recent years ATV accidents have been the leading cause of Nebraska agricultural fatalities.  Nationally more than 7 million ATVs are used for farm chores and for recreation on acreage and lake properties.
ATV RiderCourse training will be offered for youth and adults the Cass County Fairgrounds July 23, 8 a.m. – 12 noon or 1 – 5 p.m.  [The course is being offered twice; register for only one session.]
The hands-on, half-day 4-H ATV RiderCourse is conducted by Extension Educators who are licensed ATV Safety Institute Instructors. The course offers participants an opportunity to increase their safety knowledge and to practice basic riding skills in a controlled environment under the direct supervision of a licensed instructor. The RiderCourse includes pre-ride inspection, starting and stopping, quick turns, hill riding, emergency stopping, and swerving and riding over obstacles. Participants learn about protective gear, local regulations, places to ride and environmental concerns.  During training riders will develop critical thinking skills and good decision-making skills, resulting in a change in ATV-related behaviors that will reduce the number of ATV-related injuries and deaths in Nebraska.
Participants can use their own ATV, but if they don't have one of the appropriate size, they can request an ATV of the appropriate size be made available at the training site. Participants must bring a DOT-approved helmet, goggles or face shield, shoes or boots that cover ankles, gloves, long pants, and long-sleeve shirt or jacket.
Advanced registration is required to participate in RiderCourse training. The registration deadline is July 19.  Contact the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Office in Cass County to enroll or obtain a program flier at 267-2205 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  This free program is a cooperative effort among UNL Extension, the National 4-H Council and the ATV Safety Institute.
