SPRINGFIELD ELEMENTARY PTO CARNIVAL

The Springfield Elementary PTO Carnival is right around the corner and we need your help! Get started on spring cleaning and donate all your unwanted glassware and plasticware. We are looking for fun cups, glasses and bowls. We are also looking for new and gently used stuffed animals. All items can be dropped off in the donation bins at the school.

The raffle baskets are back this year. There will be a themed gift basket for each grade level. We are also looking for donations for a "best of Springfield" basket. If you are a local business and would like to donate to this basket, please call Lisa Ferguson at 402-253-2702.

The carnival will be held Friday, April 1 at Platteview High School from 6:00 -8:30p.m.

Kids will love this. Blob your own watercolor on a card and design your own special creation that will have it's own small frame. . Students need their own watercolor pan and brush. Aprons provided Ages 5+

Make something for Mom for Mother's Day.  This class will be fun for both Dad and the Children

It's a surprise for Mom...so Dad will have to come in or call for info.

May 28 It's a Beetle Happening 10:30am -11:15 or 11:30 (class size 5 max)

Spring is here and you too can have your own beetle bug just for your room.  Kids will love decorating this really cool guy. Ages 10+

June 15 It's your Choice 10:30- 11:15 or 11:30 (class size 5 max)

Decorate your own banner for your room or a felted picture frame. Only pink banners available. Ages 10+

June 21 Glass Dragonfly for Teens 10:30-noon  (class size 5 max)

Dragon Flies are fun to make.  In this class we will be using colored crushed glass placed in a mold and kiln fired.  Some cold working after firing will be necessary to finish off your work of art.  This can be done when you pick up your dragon fly.  This class will take one firing in the kiln. $35 class fee includes all materials and kiln firing. If students wish to add dicroic glass there will be an additional fee.

 

All kids classes are $15 but the teen class is $35.

All fees for registration must be paid one week prior to the class date.  Payment by cash or check only. March registration and fee need to be done  by Saturday, March 26.

The Springfield Community Foundation is seeking assistance for this proposed asset for the Springfield Downtown area, located on the vacant lot at the NE corner of 2^nd & Main. The city council has agreed to purchase the lot. $20,000 is needed to bring this project to the next level. An anonymous donor will donate the first $5000. Heritage Nebraska Seeking Hidden Treasures and Fading Places Nominations

Heritage Nebraska, a statewide not-for-profit citizens preservation organization, is seeking nominees for its 2011 List of Hidden Treasures and Fading Places.

“We have selected 20 Fading Places and 22 Hidden Treasures during the first two years of this project,” said Heritage Nebraska Executive Director J.L. Schmidt.

“The Hidden Treasures are those places that may not yet be on the radar, but they are places worth seeing and most of them provide things worth doing,” Schmidt said. “The Fading Places represent icons of our history that are threatened with extinction through demolition or neglect often brought on by lack of money and vision. “

Since the first list was released in May 2009, the Fading Places have ranged from Camp Lookout in Sidney to the Industrial Arts Building on the proposed University of Nebraska-Lincoln Innovation Campus. We’ve also included the state’s 400-mile wide Interstate 80 sculpture garden, rural churches and schools and grain elevators and the Oregon Trail and archaeological sites statewide, Schmidt said. Preservation work has been started on at least seven of the 20 Fading Places projects to date.

The Hidden Treasures have ranged from the Chadron Hotel/Old Main Street Inn in Chadron to the Lester F. Larsen Tractor Test and Power Museum on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus and places in-between. Historic Downtown Fremont, Downtown Scribner and Historic Downtown Sidney have also joined the list of places worth seeing, Schmidt said.

“Nominations are due in our office on or before May 1,” Schmidt said. The winners will be announced at the next joint state conference of Heritage Nebraska Preservation and Heritage Nebraska Main Street in June.

Heritage Nebraska is a statewide not-for-profit citizen’s organization that advocates and promotes heritage in order to build stronger communities and maintain the essential character of Nebraska. The organization is affiliated with the Statewide and Local Partners of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Trust Main Street Center.

Suitehearts Opens at Mahoney State Park

 

 

Shari Hoelker, Marikita Payne, Dave Hibler, Kevin Colbert and Adam Kovar all star in "Suitehearts" opening at Mahoney State Park on March 25th.

 

KBC Productions and Mahoney State Park announces that the romantic comedy, "Suitehearts" will begin its winter theater season run on March 25.  The story revolves around two newlywed couples who are mistakenly double-booked in the same honeymoon suite.  The Taylor's are very young, naive and visiting the big city for the first time.  The Bellamy's are older and have a more jaded outlook on life and romance.  With the help of a meddlesome bellboy, the couples find themselves in some impossible, but hilarious situations.  Adult audience members will all see a little of themselves in each of these characters as they learn the difference between a wedding and a marriage.

 

Starring in the production are Director Kevin Colbert from Weeping Water, Shari Hoelker from Omaha, Marikita Payne, Emma Hoffman and Adam Kovar all of Lincoln and Dave Hibler of Manley.  Performance dates are March 25-27, April 1-3, 8-10, 15-17, 22 and 23.  Tickets $8 for adults and $6 for children.  Curtain times are 7:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays; 2pm on Sundays.  Please call Mahoney State Park for reservations:  (402) 944-2523 ext. 7122.  A state park sticker or day pass is required to enter the park.

Plattsmouth Public Library, in association with The Big Read, will produce "Tom Sawyer" this summer.  Roles are available for four boys and two girls age 9 - 15, one man and one woman age 18-25, four women age 30+ and one man age 30+.  There may be non-speaking roles for more.  Auditions will be held Sunday, April 3rd, at 2:00pm and Thursday, April 7th at 7:00pm, in the auditorium of the Plattsmouth Public Library, 401 Avenue A.  John Payton directs.

JAMMING WORKSHOP

SCHOOLHOUSE FIDDLE CAMP

Registration is now open for the 2011 Schoolhouse Fiddle Camps, in the Old Avoca Schoolhouse, in Avoca, Nebraska.  Deborah Greenblatt, championship fiddler, author of many fiddle collections, will help the campers get in touch with their inner fiddler.  The course of study during the Schoolhouse Fiddle Camps will be designed specifically for the individual campers who sign up.

Fiddle Camp for Beginners is Monday, June 13 - Friday, June 17.  This 5 day camp includes some of the basics and fun of fiddling, such as performing in public, practice techniques, reading music, playing y ear, and jamming.  Fiddling styles include bluegrass, Cajun, Irish, Klezmer, old-time, and newly composed tunes by the campers.  Movement and singing are included in the experience.

Fiddle Camp for Intermediate/Advanced Fiddlers is Monday, July 11 - Friday, July 15.  Campers will discuss picking tunes for contests, performing in public, practice techniques, reading music, playing by ear, playing for dancers, back-up fiddling, arranging twin fiddle pieces , and jamming.  Many fiddling styles will be represented, including original compositions by the campers. Campers can sign up for all 5 days, or just 2 days, or just one day of Intermediate camp.
Monday & Tuesday is for reading fiddlers/violinists who want to read more tunes. This mini-camp is perfect for fiddlers who want to improve their music reading skills, and for classically trained violinists, violists, and cellists who are interested in various fiddling styles. Using sheet music in standard notation, these campers will get to improve their sight reading, and experience the fun of playing fiddle tunes at the same time! Fiddling styles included in the sessions will be tailored to the interest of the campers who register.
Wednesday & Thursday is for fiddlers/violinists who want to learn tunes by ear. This mini-camp is designed to jump-start your ability to pick up tunes quickly by ear, and to make them stick! Tunes used will reflect various styles, meters, tempos, and difficulty levels.
Friday is for fiddlers who “just wanna have fun”. This mini camp includes jamming, modulating, singing, dancing, experimenting, sharing, improvising, and playing fiddle related instruments.

The historic Old Avoca Schoolhouse was built in 1925, and has been the home of the Schoolhouse Performance Series since 1990.  Music lessons, workshops, fiddle camps, and field trips are offered by Schoolhouse residents, Greenblatt & Seay, and are available by appointment.
