COMMUNITY HEALTH CORNER

It is that time of the year we find ourselves out and about more often.  We are at dinners, holiday parties, and meeting up with friends and family.  Since you may be around people eating, laughing, talking, and drinking, this is a good time to familiarize yourself with basic knowledge on helping a choking victim.

The National Institute of Health is a great resource that describes how to help choking victims of various ages.  There are additional links to expand your knowledge, but it may be good idea to look into a basic CPR/first aid class to get hands-on practice.  Here is the link and be well!  www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/choking.html

SPRINGFIELD COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE

On a cold blustery day Springfield’s Spirit of Giving showed up again! We collected 49 units of blood which was 5 more than our goal set by the Red Cross (and 1 short of my personal goal). All in all, it was a GREAT DAY for our little community. So thanks to all who donated and to the few of you who tried and couldn't for some reason. Also thanks to the Patera Families for help setting up and cleaning up after the drive. The help was greatly appreciated. Also, I cannot forget the Springfield Fire Dept. for letting us use the building and all the area merchants for letting us put up our posters. Once again, thanks to all and have a great Holiday Season.

The Red Cross, St Joseph Knights of Columbus and Ralph Meister, Drive Coordinator

"SORRY!  WRONG CHIMNEY!"

OPENS MAHONEY WINTER SEASON

KBC Productions announces the start of the 2012-2013 season at Mahoney State Park with "Sorry!  Wrong Chimney!"  The show opens on Saturday, November 24 at 7:30pm.

"Chimney," is the lighthearted Christmas tale full of mistaken identities and a little slapstick comedy.  David is secretly moonlighting as a department store Santa so that he can buy his wife a new fur for Christmas.  She gets suspicious of his frequent absences and stumbles upon a suspected "other woman," a confused policeman and a notorious Christmas burglar.

Directed by Kevin Colbert, the cast includes Doug Rothgeb, Ken Patry and Shari Hoelker all of Omaha; Marikita Saure and Cory Misek of Lincoln, Melinda Mead of Plattsmouth and Kevin Holdorf of Manley.  Performances run Nov 24, 25 & 30, Dec 1, 2, 7-9, 14-16, 21-23 & 26-29.  Curtain times are 7:30pm on each date except for Sundays which are 2pm matinees.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under.  Reservations can be made by calling Mahoney State Park at 402.944.2523 ext 7122.  Those with a show ticket can receive 10% off their entree at Mahoney Grille located at the Peter Kiewit Lodge inside the park.

'Christmas at Leon's' Returns to Lofte Theatre

The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley announces that "Christmas at Leon's" will open on their stage Saturday, December 1.  The original script is written by Nebraska natives Mick Kovar and Lofte Artistic Director Kevin Colbert.  Original score is composed by Mick Kovar.

'Leon's' made its world premiere on the Lofte stage in 2010.  Its popularity was so great that the Lofte is bringing it back again this holiday season.  The story revolves around a bus full of holiday travelers who find themselves stranded at an odd little cafe in the middle of Nebraska.  Each character is struggling to find their own "Merry Christmas."  Uplifting songs and a heartfelt midwestern message make this a great show for the whole family.

Directed by Kevin Colbert, the cast includes Mick and Renee Kovar, Samantha Colbert, Mathew Pegler and Shelia Hansen Snell all of Lincoln; Scott Pope of Eagle and Wade Mumford of Elmwood; Larry Bauers, Brenda Jones and Jamion Biesterfeld from Louisville; Allison Tiller and Ellie Kroeger of Omaha; Anna Stroebel, Brandy Palatas and Tom Lucas of Papillion.

Performance dates for "Christmas at Leon's" are Dec 1, 2, 6-9 and 13-15.  Curtain times are 7:30pm Thursday through Saturday.  Sunday performances are 2pm matinees.  All tickets are $17 and reservations can be made by calling the Lofte box office at 402-234-2553.  The Lofte is located near the intersection of Hwy 1 and Hwy 50 in the town of Manley.

SCHOOLHOUSE IRISH FIDDLING CAMP

The Old Avoca Schoolhouse in Avoca, Nebraska will be hosting a special "Schoolhouse Irish Fiddling Camp", for fiddlers, violists, guitarists, and ukulele players. The sessions will be led by championship fiddler and author, Deborah Greenblatt.

The camp will be on Wednesday, March 13 - Friday, March 15, from 9 AM to 1 PM. You can sign up for 1 day, or 2 days, or all 3 days.

On Wednesday, participants will be mostly reading tunes, using sheet music in standard notation. We'll be learning melodies, harmonies, and chords. You will be improving your sight reading, and experiencing fiddling fun.

On Thursday, we will be mostly playing tunes by ear, so feel free to bring your recording gadgets. Sheet music versions of the tunes will be provided for you by the end of camp, just in case your ears need the help.

On Friday, we will be mostly jamming, modulating, singing, dancing, experimenting, sharing, and playing fiddle related instruments.

One day: $60.00
Two days: $110.00 ($55 per day)
Three days: $150.00 fee for 3 days. ($50 per day)

Enrollment for the "Schoolhouse Irish Fiddling Camp" is limited, so e-mail Deborah (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) if you are interested in participating, or if you have any questions.
