SPRINGFIELD COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE UPDATE

The Red Cross and the Springfield Knights of Columbus want to thank all who donated and made the attempt to Donate Blood on Sunday Feb 10th. We collected 35 units which was far short of our set goal of 48 but with all that was going on in the Community on Sunday and with the crud that a lot of us have this time of the year and the vacationers, we have to be real happy for the 35 that we did get collected. I want to thank Mike, Brian Patera and Jenny Luethje for helping at the drive. Some days there just are not enough hours for me to get things done. Also on the thank you list are the Merchants of Springfield and the Fire Dept. for working with us. Please “Mark your Calendars” for April 14th our next drive.

COMMUNITY HEALTH CONNECTION

Continuing with American Heart Month, this week we are going to look at an important number when talking about heart health.
Your blood pressure value is an important number for you to be aware of for your heart health.  Your blood pressure reading is comprised of two numbers, 120/80 for example.  The top number, systolic pressure, is the peak pressure in your systemic arteries when your heart contracts.  The bottom number, diastolic pressure, is the lowest pressure in your systemic arteries when your heart is refilling with blood to pump again.
Your blood pressure value is important to monitor.  We need some pressure in our system to ensure oxygen and nutrition are transported throughout our body.  Too little pressure in your system, hypotension, makes it difficult to get blood to your brain, possibly causing fainting, dizziness, and low tolerance to standing.  Too much pressure in your system, hypertension, can put more stress on your heart and blood vessels.
With persistent hypertension, your heart has to work harder to push blood though your system all the time.  If you start to exert yourself (walking, stairs, shoveling snow), the muscle tissue in your heart and body has increased oxygen demand.  A healthy heart will be able to contract a bit faster and push the blood a bit harder to meet the oxygen need.  The blood pressure will rise during this demand, but it will also return to normal levels once resting.  A heart that is already running harder to overcome the increased pressure demands will also respond with increased heart rate and pressure, pushing the cardiac system to dangerous levels.
There are numerous factors that regulate or influence our blood pressure.  If you start to notice your blood pressure trending high or low, it is important to communicate that with your physician so the cause can be identified.  The American Heart Association states adult resting blood pressure should be below 120/80.  Emergency care should be sought out if the systolic pressure rises above 180 or the diastolic rises above 110.  Try to take the time this week to get your blood pressure checked out and take care of your heart health!

The historic Old Avoca Schoolhouse was built in 1925, and has been the home of the Schoolhouse Performance Series since 1990.  Music lessons, workshops, fiddle camps, and field trips are offered by Schoolhouse residents, Greenblatt & Seay, and are available by appointment.

SCHOOLHOUSE IRISH FIDDLING CAMP

The Old Avoca Schoolhouse in Avoca, Nebraska will be hosting a special "Schoolhouse Irish Fiddling Camp", for fiddlers, violists, guitarists, and ukulele players. The sessions will be led by championship fiddler and author, Deborah Greenblatt.

The camp will be on Wednesday, March 13 - Friday, March 15, from 9 AM to 1 PM. You can sign up for 1 day, or 2 days, or all 3 days.

On Wednesday, participants will be mostly reading tunes, using sheet music in standard notation. We'll be learning melodies, harmonies, and chords. You will be improving your sight reading, and experiencing fiddling fun.

On Thursday, we will be mostly playing tunes by ear, so feel free to bring your recording gadgets. Sheet music versions of the tunes will be provided for you by the end of camp, just in case your ears need the help.

On Friday, we will be mostly jamming, modulating, singing, dancing, experimenting, sharing, and playing fiddle related instruments.

One day: $60.00
Two days: $110.00 ($55 per day)
Three days: $150.00 fee for 3 days. ($50 per day)

Enrollment for the "Schoolhouse Irish Fiddling Camp" is limited, so e-mail Deborah (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
