LOCAL RESIDENT SUBMITS WINNING ENTRY

New Waterfowl Production Area is Named “Spoonbill Flats”

Funk, Nebraska – “Spoonbill Flats” is the name selected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the Rainwater Basin’s newest Waterfowl Production Area. The USFWS’s Rainwater Basin Wetland Management District received 143 responses to its request that the public help name the new WPA.

Andrew Nelson of Springfield, Nebraska, a freshman at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, submitted the winning entry. Nelson, who grew up hunting and fishing in Nebraska, said he suggested the name because spoonbills (northern shoveler) are one of the many species of waterfowl he hopes to see on the restored wetland.

Ronnie Sanchez, project leader for the Wetland Management District, said, “We really want to thank the public for the overwhelming participation and all the great name suggestions.” He said judges were especially moved by submissions made in memory of individuals or in honor of local conservation leaders. “Although we ultimately chose the name, Spoonbill Flats, we’ll think of those people every time we drive past the WPA,” he said.

The 162-acre WPA is located five miles south and one mile west from Hildreth in Franklin County. The land was purchased in 2006 by Ducks Unlimited’s Wetlands America Trust, with support from North America Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) funds. DU and the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service subsequently restored the site’s wetland, also with NAWCA support. The USFWS purchased the land in 2012 with Land and Water Conservation funds obtained through former Senator Ben Nelson and with funds from NAWCA and DU.

The Rainwater Basin WMD was established in 1963 with the purchase of land for Massie WPA in Clay County. Today, the district manages 61 WPAs in 13 south-central Nebraska counties, principally as wetland habitat for migrating waterfowl and other birds. The contest to name the new WPA was part of the commemoration of the district’s 50th anniversary.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ducks Unlimited, and NRCS are three of the many partners in the Rainwater Basin Joint Venture, a partnership of government agencies, non-government organizations, and individuals working together to improve and protect habitat in the Rainwater Basin and Nebraska’s mixed-grass prairies. Dixie Swim Club Opens Lofte's 37th Season

The Lofte Community Theatre in Manley is excited to open its doors for its thirty-seventh season on Saturday, May 25 with the female comedy, "Dixie Swim Club."  Written by the team of Jones, Hope and Wooten, 'Dixie' is the story of five southern women whose friendship began while on their college swim team.  Now, years later, they set aside one long weekend every August to recharge relationships and meddle in each other's lives.

Directed by Kevin Colbert, the five 'Dixie' women are played by Allison Bauers of Louisville, Sharon Strassler Kryger of La Vista, Betty Colbert of Weeping Water and Dawn Holdorf and Hope Hibler both of Manley.  Production dates are May 25, 26, 31, June 1, 2 and 6-9.  All seats are reserved and tickets are $17.  Season ticket packages are on sale through June 9 for only $65.  A season ticket includes one pass to each of the upcoming shows in 2013 including 'Dixie Swim Club,' 'The Producers,' 'The Boys Next Door,' 'Nunset Boulevard,' and 'The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.'

The Lofte is located just east of the intersection of highways 1 and 50 near the town of Manley.  You can reach the box office at 402-234-2553 or visit www.Lofte.com
