LEGION BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

BUFFALO PARK

Springfield American Legion Post 143 and the City of Springfield will play host to the Area B-2 Juniors Baseball tournament starting on Friday, July 11, and continuing through Tuesday, July 15.  There will be four games on Friday and Saturday, with three on Sunday.  Teams from Blair, Bennington, Concordia, Nehawka, Fort Calhoun, Roncali, Platte Valley along with Springfield will be playing for a spot in the State Tournament.  Springfield will be in action on Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m.  Admission is $5.00 for adults or $3.00 for Veterans and Seniors and students.

SPRINGFIELD PLATTEVIEW COMMUNITY SCHOOLS EDUCATION FOUNDATION TO HOST WILD DINNER, AUCTION JULY 11  

Dig out your western wear and join the fun at the Springfield Platteview Community Schools Education Foundation Wild West Dinner and Auction July 11 at Millard Social Hall.

The event begins with a social hour and silent auction at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m., while the live auction starts at 8 p.m. Cost is $30 per person. Registration information can be found on the school district’s website at www.springfieldplatteview.org.

The Springfield Platteview Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization designed specifically to help fund educational programs in the district’s four schools. The foundation funds grant requests from teachers for classroom items and learning materials outside of the regular budget.

The First United Methodist Church in Springfield invites all children to gear up at Workshop of Wonders: Imagine and Build with God Vacation Bible School. Explore and experience how the ordinary becomes extraordinary with God! The fun begins July 20 and ends July 24 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 480 Main Street in Springfield.

 The adventure includes music that will wow your ears, interactive Bible fun, super science, cool crafts, delicious snacks, great games, and more. Registration is open to all preschool through sixth grade age children. We ask a $5 donation per child with a maximum of $10 per family.

The Sarpy County Ag Society are having a ribbon cutting on Monday, July 21 at 6:00pm at the Fairgrounds to dedicate the new Motor Sports Complex. The public is welcome.

Visit the farm animals, our Outdoor Nature Classroom, and listen to some fantastic story-telling from area high school students and adults. Special guest, Nebraska storyteller and children’s author, Tina Semteck, author of Widdly, Diddly Doo Could Not Tie His Shoe.

 

‘King O’ the Moon’ Auditions at Lofte

The Lofte Community Theatre near Manley announces it will be holding open auditions on Sunday, July 20 and Monday, July 21 at 7pm for its upcoming production, ‘King O’ the Moon.’  Depending upon the number auditioning, the process should be completed by 8pm each night.    

Written by tom Dudzik, ‘King’ is the sequel to ‘Over the Tavern.’  In this story, the Pazinski family has left the conservative 1950s for the rebellious 1960s.  Apollo 11 is about to land on the moon and the family has gathered to honor their late father’s memory.  A complete cast list can be found on the audition page of www.Lofte.com.    

The production will be directed by Kevin Colbert.  The cast calls for four men and 3 women (ages 20-60).  Rehearsals will begin the week of July 28.  Production dates are August 30-September 14.  Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.  Actors should bring a list of possible schedule conflicts to the audition.  Those with questions may call the Lofte box office at (402) 234-2553.

TWIN FIDDLING WORKSHOP

The Old Avoca Schoolhouse, in Avoca, Nebraska, is offering a TWIN FIDDLING WORKSHOP, on Saturday, August 2, from 10 AM - 12 Noon, in the Old Avoca Schoolhouse. This workshop, led by championship fiddler and author Deborah Greenblatt, is perfect for fiddlers who want to learn to play duets with other fiddlers.  Students of all ages will learn how to construct their own harmony parts by ear, and by writing the notes down in standard notation.  Tunes will range in difficulty from easy to intermediate.  Fiddle tunes from many traditions will be explored, including Irish, Swedish, Klezmer, Cajun, Scottish, etc.
