SARPY COUNTY RECYCLING UPDATE

The City Of Bellevue's New Efforts to Encourage the Increase Of Recycling

Today Green Bellevue announced its March meeting will be an informative Sarpy County Recycling Update program featuring guest speaker Epiphany Ramos, Operations Manager for City of Bellevue, who will discuss what the City is doing to increase recycling, provide an overview of new programs, and touch on what the future of recycling might look like in the Bellevue community. The program will also include guest speakers Dale Gubbels, CEO of Firstar Fiber, who will discuss the challenges faced in this region with regards to recycling and the value of recyclable materials and Ben Frakes, Community Liaison, Hands of Heartland/TGB Recycling will offer tips on how to make recycling manageable. Also attending the Green Bellevue meeting is Seth Keith from Fontenelle Forest who will open a discussion on the plastic bag ban that many cities have voted to enforce and why we should be considering this for the Bellevue and the surrounding areas. The meeting will be held on Sunday March 8, 2015, from 1:30 - 3:00pm at Nebraska Medicine - Bellevue, 25th & Hwy 370, in the lower level meeting room area in Conference Room A. Starting in late 2013, Green Bellevue volunteers put more urgency on creating awareness about the importance of removing recyclable items from the trash after receiving news of the imminent closure of the Sarpy County landfill and the planned transfer of Sarpy County trash to the landfill in David City, NE. "Doing what we can to prolong the life of the local landfill is a good thing for the environment because we avoid the inevitable 120 mile roundtrip to haul our trash that will begin," said Ruth Richter, Green Bellevue Vice President and recycling advocate. "Even more, if we can keep the valuable recyclable materials in the area, businesses that collect the items for reuse and recycling can form and thrive," said Richter.

About Lighten the Load to the Landfill and Sarpy Recycles

Green Bellevue continues efforts to spread the word about the importance of recycling in Sarpy County. Its "Lighten the Load to the Landfill" program was launched in February 2014 with the purpose of keeping recyclables out of the Sarpy County Landfill. The group consists of volunteers from around the county who raise awareness by marching in parades, speaking to city staff and officials, maintaining an informative website at http://www.sarpyrecycles.org and many other educational activities. In November 2014, the group encouraged all five mayors of the Sarpy County cities to sign proclamations to increase recycling in their city.

Green Bellevue is a 501(c)3 organization of volunteers who work with the support of our city leaders to promote a more beautiful and environmentally friendly community. It is a grassroots effort comprised of individual citizens, businesses and organizations, schools, and public entities from Bellevue, Sarpy County and the greater metro area. Green Bellevue helps individuals and groups undertake programs to enhance our neighborhoods, preserve our natural resources and foster stewardship of our environment.

The group has been organizing a local Earth Day Celebration since 2010. Help neighbors through the Red Cross and become an everyday hero

The American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to become everyday heroes by giving blood in celebration of Red Cross Month this March.

Since 1943, every president has designated March as Red Cross Month – a time to recognize those who support the Red Cross. Local communities depend on the Red Cross, which relies on donations of time, money and blood to fulfill its humanitarian mission.

It doesn’t take a cape or superpowers to be a hero. By donating blood, eligible donors can help save the lives of patients in need. Those who are unable to give blood can support blood donations by organizing a blood drive, volunteering to assist with Red Cross activities, or creating a SleevesUp virtual blood drive online at redcrossblood.org/SleevesUp and asking others to make a lifesaving donation.

How to donate blood

Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

2015 SCHOOLHOUSE CELTIC FIDDLE CAMP

The Old Avoca Schoolhouse in Avoca, Nebraska will be hosting a special "Schoolhouse Celtic Fiddling Camp", for fiddlers, violists, mandolinists, guitarists, and ukulele players. Music from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales will be featured. The sessions will be led by championship fiddler and author, Deborah Greenblatt.

The camp will be on Wednesday, March 11 - Friday, March 13, from 9 AM to 1 PM. You can sign up for 1 day, or 2 days, or all 3 days.

On Wednesday, participants will be mostly reading tunes, using sheet music in standard notation. We'll be learning melodies, harmonies, and chords. You will be improving your sight reading, and experiencing fiddling fun.

On Thursday, we will be mostly playing tunes by ear, so feel free to bring your recording gadgets. Sheet music versions of the tunes will be provided for you by the end of the day, just in case your ears need the help.

On Friday, we will be mostly jamming, modulating, singing, dancing, experimenting, sharing, and playing fiddle related instruments.

One day: $60.00
Two days: $110.00 ($55 per day)
Three days: $150.00 fee for 3 days. ($50 per day)
