The Marshmallow Challenge inspires ingenuity

OPPD contest tests students’ skills for Engineering Week

All 5th grade classrooms in Omaha Public Power District’s service territory are invited to take part in the Marshmallow Challenge, which coincides with National Engineering Week, February 19-25.

The Marshmallow Challenge is a Facebook contest open to 5th graders within the OPPD service territory. It’s designed to promote problem-solving, teamwork and innovation. The contest is part of OPPD’s ongoing commitment to support Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math (STEAM) education.

With the guidance of their teachers, students are asked to build the tallest structure they can within 20 minutes, using unconventional materials including a marshmallow, string and dry spaghetti. For classrooms that choose to participate, teachers provide the building blocks, and students supply the creativity. The sky’s the limit.

For official rules and to enter, visit Facebook/OmahaPublicPowerDistrict. Entries are being accepted until 5 p.m., Feb. 23. Winners will be announced Feb. 24. They’ll score goody bags from the OPPD Society of Engineers, as well as a visit from one of our employees to talk about engineering careers.

To see how the challenge works, view a video from last year’s Marshmallow Challenge. Feel free to share, courtesy of OPPD. Photos are available upon request.
