OPPD Director Rick Yoder, left, presented a letter of payment to Sarpy County Treasurer Rich James, right.
OPPD makes $33.1 million in payments in-lieu-of-tax
Today, the Omaha Public Power District distributed nearly $33.1 million in 2016 in-lieu-of-tax payments to 11 southeast Nebraska counties. This compares with $31.2 million distributed the previous year.
“These payments demonstrate public power’s commitment to our customer-owners and neighbors within the local communities we serve,” said OPPD Board Chair Tim Gay, who represents Sarpy County, alongside Director Rick Yoder.
OPPD’s payment to Sarpy County totaled $4,937,491, up from $4,651,528 paid last year. In-lieu-of-tax payment amounts are based on 5 percent of OPPD’s gross revenues from the previous year’s retail electricity sales in incorporated cities and towns, and they take the place of property taxes. County treasurers distribute the funds to school districts, cities and other entities to fund needed services and improvements.
“This funding will support the continued growth we are seeing Sarpy County,” said Director Rick Yoder. “It will make a real difference for local school districts and municipalities. We are happy to present this payment on behalf of OPPD.”
In addition to in-lieu-of-tax payments, the district pays general sales taxes, gasoline taxes, wheel taxes, motor vehicle license fees and permit fees like any other business.
Yoder noted the following are among those receiving in-lieu-of-tax payment distributions (rounded to the nearest dollar):
Sarpy County …………………………..… $710,400
City of Bellevue ………………….…..…. $661,124
Bellevue Public Schools ................ $159,492
City of Gretna ............................... $56,964

City of Papillion ……..………….………. $235,677
Papillion/LaVista Public Schools …. $410,257
City of Springfield ……………..…….…. $24,743
Springfield/Platteview Schools …... $3,806
Other (Learning Community, General) … $2,273,088
A full list of the payments made to each county follows:

LOFTE PLAYERS ARE STATE CHAMPIONS!
This past summer the Lofte Community Theatre entered Nebraska’s one-act play contest. “Shakespeare’s a D#@k,” is a competition piece by Mark Kenneally about a redneck who wakes up after a heavy night of boozing to find that he can only speak in Shakespearian verse. Directed by Allison Bauers of Louisville, the cast and crew took home several awards including State Champion, Best Supporting Actress (Silvia Conley), Best Supporting Actor (Doug Rothgeb) and Best Set Design (Nick Haussler).
The Lofte production has now qualified to compete in the Region V American Association of Community Theaters Festival being held April 27-30 in Brainerd, MN. There, the Lofte will compete against seven other theaters including the best from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota and South Dakota. Winners of that competition will advance to the National competition being held in June.
The Lofte is currently undergoing a fundraising campaign to raise capital to offset travel and competition expenses. To donate, please contact the box office at 402.234.2553 or visit their GoFundMe page.
