OPPD Board Secretary Rick Yoder shared this year’s payment amount with Sarpy County Treasurer Brian Zuger on March 28.
OPPD makes $33.9 million in payments in lieu of tax
Sarpy County’s share is $5.1 million
Omaha Public Power District distributed nearly $33.9 million today for in-lieu-of-tax payments to 11 southeast Nebraska counties. It’s an increase of nearly $1 million more than OPPD distributed last year.
OPPD’s payment to Sarpy County totaled $5,112,950, up from $4,857,254 paid last year. In-lieu-of-tax payment amounts are based on 5% of OPPD’s gross revenues from the previous year’s retail electricity sales in incorporated cities and towns, and they take the place of property taxes.
County treasurers distribute the funds to school districts, cities and other entities to fund needed services and improvements.
“Recent weeks have been difficult for Sarpy County. While portions of the county are cleaning up from historic flooding, this county continues to thrive,” said Secretary Rick Yoder, who represents Sarpy County on the OPPD Board of Directors, alongside OPPD Board Treasurer Tim Gay.
Yoder met with Sarpy County Treasurer Brian Zuger on March 28, sharing payment details. “We are proud of this community,” Yoder said, “and we’re proud to support it.”
In addition to in-lieu-of-tax payments, the district pays general sales taxes, gasoline taxes, motor vehicle license fees and permit fees like any other business.
The treasurer’s office reports the following are among those receiving in-lieu-of-tax payment distributions (rounded to the nearest dollar):
Sarpy County …………………………..… $732,057
