Springfield Boy Scout Troop 711 Eagle Scout Ceremony
Mitchell Rudie, Eagle Scout
Evan White, Eagle Scout
On Wednesday, February 12, 2020, Evan White and Mitchell Rudie became the 21st and 22nd Scouts from Springfield Troop 711 to earn their Eagle Scout rank. The Eagle Scout is the highest rank achievable in Scouting and is only earned by about 5% of eligible Scouts. To earn this high rank, Scouts need to earn at least 21 merit badges, serve in a leadership position in their troop and lead a service project that benefits their community. Both Scouts are pictured with Springfield Troop 711 Scoutmaster, Joseph Hagerty III.
Congratulations, Evan and Mitchell!

“IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY”
Although the Congregational Church was the first church in Springfield to hold services, the Methodist Episcopal Church is the longest ongoing church. The cornerstone to the first church edifice was placed in the foundation on July 6, 1882. Its first pastor was C.D. Day. Before the building was finished, services were held in a schoolhouse until September 10, 1882, when the new church was ready. Members totaled approximately 40 people.
By 1926 with Maynard Van Dyke as pastor, membership at 196 had outgrown the church building. A building fund was established, and a building committee appointed. After the funds were raised, construction began by jacking up the old church, given a fourth of a turn, moved north ten feet, and the present original church was built around it. A dedication for the new structure was held on August 28, 1927.
