SARPY COUNTY HELP LINE

The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office along with Sarpy County Human Services has established a help line for the citizens of Sarpy County during the COVID-19 pandemic event. Starting today, people who are sick, elderly, or caretakers of this demographic in Sarpy County may call the Sarpy County Sheriff Helpline at 402-593-1593 for needs such as picking up prescriptions, groceries, or other necessities. A uniformed Sarpy County Sheriff's Deputy will pick up and deliver these items in a marked police cruiser. This helpline may also be utilized by the general public to make non-emergency police reports via telephone that do not require a police officer present in their home.

The following providers are participating in this program:

Walmart in Papillion
Target in Papillion (Groceries Only)
Bakers at 36th St & Twin Creek Dr
Bakers at 801 Galvin Rd (Pharmacy Only)
Springfield Drug (Pharmacy Only)

Please check the Sheriff's Office website and Facebook Page for any new updates to this program.

MEDICAL CARE FOR CHILDREN & TEENS

Children’s Hospital & Medical Center has launched a dedicated Respiratory Assessment Center to address symptoms of respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, in children and teens. The Respiratory Assessment Center is located on Children’s main campus at 84th & Dodge Streets. Please enter off of 84th Street at the Specialty Pediatric Center entrance, make an immediate right and park; the center’s entrance is south of the main Specialty Pediatric Center entrance.

Symptoms consistent with COVID-19 are: fever, cough, shortness of breath and/or sore throat. If your child has these symptoms or you are concerned about a potential exposure, please call your primary care provider or Children’s COVID-19 Help Line at 402-955-3200.

If this is an urgent matter and your child needs immediate care on nights or weekends, please go directly to the Respiratory Assessment Center—not Children’s Urgent Care. Children’s Urgent Care will be sending patients with potentially infected respiratory symptoms to the center for care.

IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

 Opera House 1

The Springfield Opera House was constructed in the years 1891 and 1892. It located on the northwest corner of 3rd & Main Street. The first amateur performance “Border Land”, a wild west drama was held on February 19 & 20, 1892. The house was filled to capacity and the play was pronounced a success. Many amateur plays were performed in the years following. The Opera House was truly a community center. It was the place for graduation exercises, alumni banquets, church bazaars and dinners, home-talent plays, the "Clint and Bessie Robbins" road shows, the Winter Chautauqua, Farmers' Institute, Lodge meetings, and public dances. By 1939, the Opera House had been torn down.

OPPD makes nearly $34 million in payments in lieu of tax

Sarpy County’s share is $5.5 million

Omaha Public Power District distributed nearly $34 million today for in-lieu-of-tax payments to 11 southeast Nebraska counties. That’s up slightly from nearly $33.9 million distributed last year.

OPPD’s payment to Sarpy County totaled $5,540,436, up from $5,112,950 paid last year.

In-lieu-of-tax payment amounts are based on 5% of OPPD’s gross revenues from the previous year’s retail electricity sales in incorporated cities and towns, and they take the place of property taxes.

“This is one way we, as a public power utility, give back to our customers and contribute to our communities,” said OPPD Board Chair Craig Moody. “We know that these funds will be put to good use within the counties we serve.”

County treasurers distribute the funds to school districts, cities and other entities to fund needed services and improvements.

In addition to in-lieu-of-tax payments, the district pays general sales taxes, gasoline taxes, motor vehicle license fees and permit fees like any other business. A full list of the payments made to each county follows:

Douglas:  $26,957,456

Sarpy:  $5,540,436

Washington:  $650,426

Saunders:  $320,521

Cass:  $279,762

Dodge:  $143,759

Nemaha:  $40,352

Johnson:  $15,023

Richardson:  $13,717

Otoe:  $4,122

Colfax:  $4,316
