IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY
Rescue Unit Members: (left to right) Orville Jack Beck, Mrs. McCarty, George Erhart, Mrs. Hike, Mrs. Hahn (on step), Mrs. Erhart, Mrs. McBride, Henry Glesmann
In 1958 sixteen members formed the new Springfield Rescue Unit. Springfield area residents and businesses contributed close to $4000 to purchase a one-ton truck that was equipped with two stretchers, a bed, complete oxygen and resuscitation apparatus, bandages, and splints. The first rescue call was for a two-vehicle accident on Hwy 50. Mrs. Floyd McCarty joined Henry Glesmann and Jack Latham on the first run for the accident. Mrs. Troy Buskirk and Mrs. Herman McBride drove to the scene and were on board when the unit took an injured victim to the hospital. Of the sixteen squad members, eight were women which was mostly unheard of at the time. The new unit filled a much-needed gap in emergency calls. Rescue Unit president, Henry Glesmann, noted the time the squad saved could be the difference between life and death. Please remember this Saturday's Springfield Fire & Rescue BBQ fundraiser will support increasing emergency services to our community. Thank you to past and current members of Springfield Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
