IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

 History Lib1992

The 1992 Summer Reading Program at Springfield Library proved to be a success with almost 60% of reading participants achieving their reading goal. At the beginning of the program readers signed a contract stating how many books they would read. The theme for the summer was “Dive Into a Good Book”.  Guest readers during the program included: Bonnie Opitz, Deb Milks, Cindy Koehlmoos, Kathy Krzycki, Jean Gottsch, Christie Stoddard, Alice Smith, and Michelle Welsh.  Winners of two contests were Cori Post for naming the library octopus, “Neon Leon” and Kyle Weighner for guessing the closest number of seashells in a fishbowl.  On July 29th all children who completed their reading contracts were awarded prizes.

Gardening

SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS

Now is the time we need to be thinking about a garden journal. This journal is something I keep thinking about doing each year and either run out of time or start it at the beginning of the year and it goes by the wayside.

I have even heard some people are so efficient they keep their seed packets, their plant tags and store them in nicely organized envelopes or plastic bags. Who are you and, please, come volunteer for the Springfield Fairgrounds Master Gardeners.
Now is when you realized that the pot you placed three cucumbers in was only going to be big enough for one and now your having to water three times or more a day.
You missed read a label and put a shade plant and a full sun plant in the same pot. A cactus in with an annual that needs more frequent water.
Journals for your garden can be very handy right now. Not necessarily to keep track of your mistakes but to keep track of where you planted something and don't put a relative in the same spot next year. What insect invade which plant and what you did to "make it go away".
There are plenty of apps on your phone where you can make garden notes and take pictures of flowers you liked or insects you had or disease issues. Just make a promise to yourself not to delete them. And before I go..."Sarpy County Fair" is upon us soon so be ready to join in the fun.

Dear Avoca friends near and far!

The Avoca Town Hall has been a big part of the Village for many years. Without it many people would be at a loss on where to gather for village events and many other occasions.

The last couple of years have been a struggle due to Covid cancellations, funds are short. The Hall is in major need of repairs. Board members are working on raising money to help cover the cost of repairs that need to be made.

1. New Roof
2. Masonry work in front of building
3. Replacement of Deck
4. General Maintenance.

If you would like to help in our efforts to save the Town Hall we
would very much appreciate any monetary donation towards our goal of
$25,000.

How to donate:
Send check made payable to Avoca Town Hall to:
