What’s New in Springfield, NE
January 17, 2007

Winter arrived! Snow blankets the area along with frigid temperatures. Brr, baby, it’s cold outside. With local forecasters predicting this snow storm, how did you prepare to be housebound? Did you run out to get needed groceries at Hometown Market or fill the vehicle with gas at B&B Pit Stop, Neitzels Corner, or BP? Maybe your preparations included stopping by the Springfield Drug for needed prescriptions or an ice cream soda, meeting with the coffee gang at B&B Pit Stop, browsing the shop at Eclectic, getting that needed haircut at Envy Salon, checking out some reading material at the Springfield Memorial Library, washing your vehicle at the Springfield Car Wash, or getting in that one last walk around the Buffalo Park trail. Fortunately, we missed the brunt of the storm, so we did not have to hunker down long. It’s always good to be prepared, though, just in case and actually sometimes it can be quite fun.

~Be sure to check on your elder and housebound neighbors. With the arrival of snow and colder weather, it’s hard for some folks to get out. Stop by to say, “Hello” and bring cheer to a friend.

Lemonade, a new variety this year, is sandwich cookie made with shortbread and a lemony tart icing. All cookies are trans fat free. (Yahoo! Now I can eat more!) All sale proceeds stay in the Great Plains Girl Scout Council district.

Colds & Flu Season - Guess what you brought back from visiting at Aunt Mary’s house? Holiday season with family and friends contributes to making influenza activity occur most often in January. By now, we should have gotten a flu vaccination to prevent catching influenza but remember that one of the best flu and cold prevention methods is hand washing. Be sure to wash hands often and for 20 seconds. A good tip is to wash singing “Happy Birthday” two times. You’ll be the singing hit of the rest room!

~Our sympathies go out to Jackie Schrum’s family. Sadly, Jackie, one of Springfield’s nicest and funniest ladies, passed away last week. I’ll bet most folks in Springfield could offer you a funny story about her as a tribute to a person who thought of one and all as a friend. You’ll surely be missed in Springfield, Jackie.
