What’s New in Springfield, NE
January 31, 2007

Today is the last day in January. We heading into February, the shortest month of the year! Groundhog’s Day is this week. Will the groundhog see his shadow?

January 31st : Today in history -

1949 The first TV daytime soap opera “These Are My Children” was broadcast by the NBC station in Chicago.
1971- Astronauts , Alan B. Shepard, Jr., Edgar D. Mitchell, Stuart Roose blasted off in Apollo 14 for a mission trip to the moon.

Our days and nights are filled with freezing temps and blustery artic winds, so we huddle in our houses and bundle up to traipse out to our cars. So, isn’t this a grand time to do a little home improvement? Think of the possibilities! A gallon of paint will brighten up the kitchen, a new light fixture in the entry way will lighten up that area, or new trim molding will do wonders for a room. Thinking bigger? How about new flooring, replacing the bathroom fixtures, or restoring those kitchen cabinets? Thinking smaller? Purchase fresh flowers, arrange in a vase, and take pleasure in inviting a taste of spring in your home.

You know you live in a small town when….

  • You can’t run to the grocery store looking like you just hopped out of bed hoping no one you know is there, because everyone knows you.
  • You go for walk with your spouse who stops, points and stares at houses pointing out various home improvements or deteriorations and you haven’t been arrested yet.
  • You receive calls from other parents when your child is behaving in a fashion that is totaly embarrassing to your family.
  • You’re “just running” to the post office and you’re gone for 40 minutes because you were gabbing with someone you know.
  • You don’t know the names of the streets in your town, just where people live.
  • You run out of gas in the parking lot of the gas station and the owner saves you by filling up the gas can with gas and gets your car started for you. Of course, you only have to pay for the gas. (I’ll never forget you, Dwight Neitzel and Duane Neitzel -second time that happened).

Springfield Historical Tidbit:
On February 1, 1916 as the automobile was beginning to become evident in the area, Mr. Richard H. Kiger and his son Roy established a repair shop and filling station, known as R.H. Kiger and Son, in a building on the north corner of South 1st and Locust Streets.
