February is the month of love, friendship and hearts. Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Don’t forget to buy your cards and gifts for that someone special in your life.

February is also American Heart Month. Be good to yourself and join the battle to defeat cardiovascular disease. Adopt a healthy lifestyle by choosing the right foods and preparing them in a healthy way, get plenty of exercise, lower your cholesterol, and manage your weight. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SPRINGFIELD

“Announcing” - Springfield Days will be held June 1st & 2nd.

February 7 - 7:00pm Get ready for Springfield Days. A meeting will be held at the Springfield American Legion Hall to plan this event. Everyone is welcome to attend.

February 8 - 4:00 - 6:00pm Make Valentine Crafts for family and friends at the Springfield Memorial Library.

February 10 - 5:00 -8:00 pm. Help out the those in need by attending the Mission Soup Supper. This year’s event will take place at St. Joseph’s Church. Hope to see you there!

February 12 - 7:00pm. Platteview High School Vocal Concert

February 13 - 11:30am Senior Brown Bag Lunch. Join us for soup, desserts and beverages with a short program following lunch.

February 13 - 3:30 - 4:30pm Young Writer’s Workshop for ages 9-12. Learn the steps it takes to write creative stories. 5 sessions every Tuesday, February 13- March 13.

February 14 - Valentine’s Day, extend love and affection to family and friends.

My, it’s been cold out there. We are all thoroughly frozen, by now. Have you noticed the days are starting to grow a little longer? Maybe, you are one who embraces the cold. One who steps outside to feel the brisk Nebraska air. One who indulges in the joy of winter in the midlands and the stark beauty that this season brings us. Maybe you are one who relishes the warmth of the indoors and just endures the arctic cold while dreaming of summery days. All in all, it is a time for us to slow down a bit and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and sit by the fire with a good book. Besides, what else would we chat about with friends and neighbors, if we couldn’t complain this darn, bone-chilling weather?

SPRINGFIELD HISTORICAL TIDBIT
In the early years Springfield residents maintained an icehouse. Located at a pond, supplied from a natural springs, south of Main Street on Highway 50.
In the winter the ice was cut into blocks and stored in the icehouse in beds of straw. During the spring and summer months the ice was sold and delivered to local households.
