What’s New in Springfield, NE
February 14, 2007

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone in Springfield. Hopefully, this day brought love and romance to your life. This is certainly a busy time with Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and Mardi Gras all within the same week. Imagine all the fun you and your family could have if you celebrated all three events.

President’s Day is Monday, February 19. This day is actually observed in honor of the first president, George Washington. Many Americans believe that we honor both Washington and Abraham Lincoln whose birthday is February 12. In 1968, when Congress passed the Monday Holiday’s Act, reformers wanted this holiday to honor both Washington and Lincoln but the proposal was rejected. Through public sentiment and advertising, the term President’s Day has become popular throughout the country.

Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday. This celebration comes from the ancient custom of parading a fat oxen through Paris, France to remind people that they were not allowed to eat meat during Lent. In Britain, Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day, is celebrated. This tradition began as a way to feast before Lent by eating pancakes made of fat, butter, and eggs which were forbidden after Ash Wednesday.
