FOR THE KIDDOS AND THE YOUNG AT HEART
IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY
Santa Claus heard Christmas gift wishes from all the children at the annual Christmas party given by the Springfield Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department.
Before the Fire Hall was built on South 1st Street, the Springfield Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department held their annual Christmas party every year at the Community Building. The traditional event began with the showing of a movie after which Santa Claus arrived to visit with every child. After visiting with Santa, each child was given a bag of treats consisting of candy, peanuts, and fruit. In 1981 rescue captain, Peggy Stark, was in charge of the program. A Laurel and Hardy movie was shown to approximately one hundred fifty children who attended. Due to subzero weather that December, the number was lower than normal. The year before an estimated two hundred fifty children attended. The tradition continued on Sunday with the volunteer firefighters and rescue personnel visiting the homes of Springfield senior citizens to distribute bags of treats. They also traveled to the Louisville Care Center and the Papillion Huntington Park Care Center to treat Springfield area residents. Thank you to Springfield’s past and current Fire and Rescue volunteers who carry on Springfield’s Christmas traditions. We wish you a Happy Holiday season!
