 IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

History Xmas 1988

Springfield Volunteer Fire Department members decorate the Christmas tree at the Community Building.

In 1988 the Springfield Commercial Club decided to set up a Christmas tree at the Community Building for the first ever Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Three members of the club: Don Buskirk, Tom Siewert, and Corky Spencer cut down a pine tree on Leonard and Betty Simon’s place for the event. Unfortunately, the tree had fallen out of the pickup truck on the way back to town. It looked more than a little bedraggled. After hoisting the tree into position at the Community Building comments were not too favorable concerning the tree’s appearance. A few phone calls later, Corky Spencer had found a new tree.  A shapely conifer was donated by Joe Olivo.  Springfield Volunteer Fire Department members, Peg Stark, Louie Post, Corey Inserra. Allen Opper, Corky Spencer, Emil Beyer, and Jack Gage got to work stringing lights in time for the Sunday night lighting.  On the night of the tree lighting,  hot cocoa, coffee, and homemade Christmas cookies were ready for the crowd. The momentum was building but when the lights were turned on, disaster struck again. Nothing happened! After a little finagling, the bottom half of the tree sparkled with lights and the ceremony proceeded with Christmas carols and a word of appreciation to all who contributed to the event. Thanks were given to: Springfield Area Commercial Club, Springfield Volunteer Fire Department, the City of Springfield, Hazel Latham, Harlene Spencer, Joe & Wendie Olivo, Leonard Simon, and Corey Inserra.
